Pittsburgh: Springsteen opens with Clash cover and shakes up setlist

Bruce Springsteen shook up the set list at his concert in Pittsburgh last night. The show kicked off with an unexpected cover of The Clash’s «Clampdown», one of the many great tracks on their classic London Calling album. It was followed by «Badlands» and «Johnny 99», then came the tour debut of «Stand on It» and a great swing version of «Seven Nights to Rock», sung as a duo with Patti Scialfa, who was back after a few shows absent.

More changes were to arrive: after the popular crowdsurfing on «Hungry Heart» it was time for another tour debut: «I Wanna Be With You», followed by another masterpiece from the Tracks box set, «Back In Your Arms».

«The Promised Land» and «Youngstown» were nice additions to the set, which then took another unexpected turn. None of the standard songs at this point in the show was performed (we’re talking about «Darlington County», «Shackled and Drawn» and «Waitin’ On a Sunny Day») and instead the Pittsburgh audience got to hear «Lonesome Day», «Mary’s Place» and «Radio Nowhere».

The encores brought more surprises: «The Promise» (performed by Bruce solo at the piano) opened, followed by the antiwar duo formed by «The Wall» and «Born in the U.S.A.». Next was the guest spot for the Grushecky family (father and son, Joe & Johnny), who played on «Light of Day», «Frankie Fell in Love», «Born to Run» and «Dancing in the Dark».

The show finished with «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out», «Shout» and the solo organ version of «Dream Baby Dream».

During the encores Bruce brought up yet another surprise: he announced two shows with Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers to be held on May 22nd and 23rd at Soldiers & Sailors Hall in Pittsburgh. The tickets are now on sale thru Ticketmaster (few left!).

Rock’n’roll fest in Charlotte (and «Iceman»!)

For the second time in his career Bruce Springsteen performed live the very rare song «Iceman». This beautiful Darkness outtake (released on the Tracks box set in 1998) had previously only been played live once (as a solo performance in Philadelphia in May 2005 during the Devils & Dust tour).

The Charlotte show, though, was a rock’n’roll fest. Bruce picked up many sign requests and that brought the tour debuts of several rock classics such as «Louie Louie», «Mustang Sally» and «Brown-Eyed Girl», plus «From Small Things» and «Darkness on the Edge of Town» (first time as an encore).

The 3-hour, high-intensity performance was full of rock songs, like «Cadillac Ranch», «Out in the Street», «No Surrender», «My Love Will Not Let You Down», «Light of Day» or «Born in the U.S.A.».

There was almost no ballads. The exception being the «Iceman» opener plus «Jack of All Trades», «Racing in the Street» (another sign request) and «Dream Baby Dream», which closed the show.

Springsteen rocks Nashville

Bruce Springsteen rocked Nashville last night for three hours and thirteen minutes. His show in the Music City featured two great covers of Elvis Presley’s «Burning Love» and the Rolling Stones’ «Satisfaction», plus the returns of «I’m On Fire», «Downbound Train» and «Born in the U.S.A.».

The encores featured «The Wall», followed by an unexpected and fantastic version of «Point Blank» (first time ever the song appears as an encore), one of the jewels from The River that rarely appears in the live show.

The 3-hour Columbus show kicked off last night with «High Hopes», followed by the always intense «Adam Raised a Cain». Highlights included the tour debut of «Blinded by the Light», plus the comebacks of «Prove it All Night» (with ’78 intro), «Trapped», «Light of Day» (closing the main set) and «Backstreets» (first encore). The show closed with the solo organ version of «Dream Baby Dream».

The live downloads are back at the official store. The Cincinnatti and Virginia Beach live recordings can be purchased now.
