Saturday night’s show at Virginia Beach featured a high energy performance by Bruce and the E Street Band right after their Hall of Fame induction. «The Wall», one of the highlights from the High Hopes album, was one of the five tour debuts, along with a cover of «May I», a song by Virginia’s own Bill Deal & The Rhondels (reached #39 in the 1969 hit lists).
An unexpected «Mary’s Place» was next, and a powerful «Badlands» was followed by «Darkness on the Edge of Town» and a set of summer songs featuring «Sherry Darling», «Talk to Me», «Seaside Bar Song» and «Jersey Girl».
The first encore brought the debut of «The Wall», dedicated to both Walter Chicon and Bart Haynes (The Castiles drummer who died in Vietnam) during a speech in which Bruce remembered the old days in Richmond (Virginia) where he used to play to faithful audiences with Steel Mill and The Bruce Springsteen Band between 1969 and 1972. After three hours and ten minutes the show ended with a full-band, glorious version of «Thunder Road».
