São Paulo

Bruce Springsteen performed in São Paulo in one of the tiniest venues of the tour: the wonderful Espaço das Américas, with a capacity of only 8,000. The small hall created an intimate atmosphere for a noisy and enthusiastic crowd, which saw Bruce leap into the audience during «Spirit in the Night» until he got to the bar.

The show opened with a strong cover of Raul Seixa’s «Sociedade Alternativa» that put everyone on their feet. Seixas, born in São Paulo, was a mythical figure in Brazil, and passed away in 1989 when he was only 44.

Though the set list was very similar to the other shows in this leg of the tour, it did include rare versions of «Darkness on the Edge of Town» and «Prove it All Night» (with ’78 intro).

No big surprises for the rest of the set, save two sign requests («No Surrender» and «Bobby Jean») and the addition of «This Little Light of Mine» in the encores. During «She’s the One» Bruce passed the mic to a fan who jumped onstage for a marriage proposal. An acoustic «This Hard Land» bid farewell to a very energetic show in front of a receptive audience.

Victor Jara’s relative meets Bruce in Chile

After a very long show in Santiago, Bruce met Patricio Doñas in his dressing room. Patricio is the grandson of Georgina Jara, Víctor’s sister. Patricio and Bruce talked and discussed Víctor’s life and work, and at the end of the meeting Patricio gave Bruce the lyrics to the song «El derecho de vivir en paz», hand-written by Victor Jara himself.

Patricio told the story to the Chilean newspaper La Tercera:

“That caught his attention and he said it was something amazing (…). Rather than say something, he asked me a lot. He knew the history well, much better than many Chileans. He was very grateful. And for me it meant overcoming the fear of my own story.»

Bruce Springsteen sings a song for Argentina

He promised it at the end of his show in Buenos Aires and here it is: León Gieco’s «Sólo le pido a Dios», as taped during Bruce’s stay in Buenos.

Bruce posted the song yesterday in his website, along with this message:

There is a song I planned to sing at our Buenos Aires concert that I learned from the wonderful Argentine singer, Mercedes Sosa. I wasn’t quite prepared that evening so I’m glad to send this out now to all of our friends and fans in Argentina.

RIP Steve Jump

We are saddened and shocked by the loss of our friend Steve Jump. He passed away last Saturday in his home in England. In 1986 he founded the Badlands club and store in Cheltenham, with his brother Philip. He was a truly great guy, traveling companion, old-time Bruce fan and, most important, a great person and a good friend. Rest in peace, brother.
