Adelaide #2

joewalladelaide2

The second show in Adelaide has brought nine tour premieres, including covers of Martha and the Vandellas’ «Heatwave«, John Fogerty’s «Rockin ‘All Over the World» and Eddie Floyd’s «Raise Your Hand«. After the «Heatwave» kick off came a powerful foursome with «Jackson Cage«, «She’s the One», «Backstreets» (with the «Sad Eyes» interlude) and «Cover Me«. Later in the set Bruce brought «Better Days» and «Long Walk Home«, and then started the encores with two more tour debuts: «Hunter of Invisible Game» and «Jungleland«.

In only 9 shows Bruce has now performed 99 different songs (plus a snippet of Buddy Holly’s «Not Fade Away»).

Springsteen offers marathon show in Adelaide

Five tour premieres, songs off 11 different albums, two acoustic songs to end the show, three-and-a-half hours of intense rock’n’roll… all the ingredients to make a show memorable. In a city under an intense heatwave Bruce’s first words onstage were «Why is it so fucking hot here?», before opening with a fantastic «Summertime Blues», followed by an impromptu «Detroit Medley» (after a sign request from behind the stage), then «Badlands» and «My Love Will Not Let You Down».

The show had a lot of surprises and variety, including five songs off Wrecking Ball and five off High Hopes, alongside the tour premieres of «Human Touch», «Mary’s Place» and «Back In Your Arms».

«Heaven’s Wall» was followed by a Darkness two-fer: the title song and «Prove it All Night», with its 1978 intro. AC/DC’s «Highway to Hell» returned in the encores, along with «Ramrod» and a version of «Shout» that featured Jon Landau on guitar. «If I Should Fall Behind» and «Thunder Road», both solo acoustic, put an end to a very long set. (During the afternoon soundcheck Bruce also rehearsed «Slow Turning», one of the many great songs from the amazing american songwritter John Hiatt).

Perth #3: no speed limit

Unpredictable: that’s the word that defines the shows Springsteen has been offering in recent years. And the trend continues with the High Hopes tour. Springsteen knows that his most faithful and devoted followers (those who anxiously wait for the next downloadable show to appear on the official store or devote whole days to queue to get the best position in the pit) love the constant set list changes, and these days he seems resolute to go beyond any expectations. This week in Perth Bruce and the band have played 57 different songs in three nights, matching the figures of the three nights in Cape Town .

Last night’s show, the third and last in Perth, opened with an explosive cover of AC/DC’s «Highway to Hell»: high voltage electricity with a guitar battle between Nils, Tom, Bruce and Steve. The song set the bar high, but Bruce raised the stakes with «Badlands » and then… «Adam Raised a Cain»! «Streets of Fire»! » Candy ‘s Room»!, immediately followed by «High Hopes», «Just Like Fire Would» and «Spirit in the Night».

In the second half of the main set Bruce decided he was not going to be predictable and omitted «Sunny Day» and «The Rising», offering two tour premieres («Downbound Train» and «Radio Nowhere») and some more hot rocks («No Surrender», «Because the Night», «Open All Night»…).

It was an intense, non-stop-to-breathe show. In fact, not a single ballad until he returned to the stage for the encores, and sang a solo-piano version of «The Promise». End of the pause. Then followed half an hour of collective rock’n’roll ecstasy with the usual encores, culminating with «American Land». And, finally, two slow numbers to say goodbye, with solo acoustic versions of «Terry ‘s Song» and «Thunder Road» .

Perth #2

Second night in Perth brought 13 changes, including the tour premieres of «Sherry Darling», «Light of Day», «Girls in Their Summer Clothes» (acoustic), «Save My Love» and «Youngstown».

«Heaven’s Wall» moved today to the first encore slot, and was followed by «Rosalita». After «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out» Bruce offered two acoustic songs this time: «I’ll Work For Your Love» (previously performed in the same format at the Johannesburg pre-show) and «Thunder Road». The show lasted 3 hours and 5 minutes.
