Though the High Hopes tour ended last week with two shows at the smallest venue of the whole tour (The Mohegan Sun Arena, which holds 7,858 people), Springsteen still had energy for two ‘encore’ shows, this time as the special guest of Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers.
The shows were held at the Soldiers & Sailors Hall in Pittsburgh. Though he was officially a guest, Springsteen quickly took lead both nights.
Both shows had the style and structure of previous performances in the same venue, in 2010 and 2011, and the shows he usually does with Grushecky at every year’s Light of Day festival in Asbury Park.
Armed with an acoustic guitar, Bruce opened for Joe playing 3 solo numbers each night. Thursday’s show featured an unexpected «Mary, Queen of Arkansas» (which he explained, believe it or not, was a song about a transvestite), plus «Two For The Road» (the B-side of the «Tunnel of Love» 7″ single back in 1987, released on Tracks) and the exquisite «Kingdom of Days». Friday’s acoustic opening featured «Further On (Up The Road)», «I’ll Work For Your Love» and «Outlaw Pete».
Then it was time for Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers, who performed 3 songs before Bruce came back onstage, now with his electric guitar, for a rousing «Adam Raised a Cain». The show mixed classic Grushecky songs («Never Be Enough Time», «Talking to the King», «Pumping Iron»…) with the Springsteen songs they usually play on this occasions («Darkness», «The Promised Land», «Light of Day», «Hearts of Stone»…).
But there were also quite a few unexpected surprises, such as the rock version of «Racing in the Street (’78)», «Leap of Faith» or the live world debut of the very rare «Leavin’ Train», a Human Touch outtake released on disc 4 of Tracks. And it rocked(Bruce did it both nights). The two hour show came to an end with Bruce alone onstage again, offering sublime performances of «The Wall» and «Incident on 57th Street».
Leavin’ Train
Friday night featured many changes in the set list. After Bruce’s acoustic performance, Joe and the Houserockers (both nights with the collaborations of Eddie Manion -a Pittsburgh resident- on sax and producer Rick Witkowski on the guitar) did a mini set and then were joined by Bruce. Different songs performed on night #2 included «Atlantic City», «Pink Cadillac», «Better Days», «Human Touch», «Lucky Town» and «Save My Love». The show finished with two solo acoustic performances of «My Beautiful Reward» and «Jersey Girl».
Aunque la gira High Hopes finalizó la semana pasada con dos conciertos en el pequeñísimo Mohegan Sun Arena de Connecticut (solo 7.858 personas por noche), Springsteen ofreció una prórroga para sus incondicionales más fieles: dos conciertos en Pittsburgh como invitado especial de Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers.
Oficialmente era el invitado, pero a la práctica, como ya hizo en 2010 y 2011 y en distintas apariciones en el festival Light of Day de Asbury Park, pasó a liderar el concierto de principio a fin. Bruce salió al escenario ambas noches armado de su acústica, ejerciendo de telonero, y sorprendió con versiones de «Mary, Queen of Arkansas» (una historia sobre la relación con un transexual, según sus propias palabras), «Two For The Road» (cara B del single «Tunnel of Love» en 1987) y la exquisita «Kingdom of Days». Para la segunda noche el ‘teloneo’ consistió en «Further On (Up The Road)», «I’ll Work For Your Love» y una inesperada «Outlaw Pete», todas en acústico.
Siguiendo la tradición Joe Grushecky y sus Houserockers tomaron el escenario para ofrecer algunos de sus temas. Tras tres de ellos apareció Bruce de nuevo, esta vez con su eléctrica colgada, e incendió el espectacular teatro con «Adam Raised a Cain». El concierto alternó temas de Grushecky («Never Be Enough Time», «Talking to the King», «Pumping Iron»…) con las canciones de Springsteen que suelen tocar en estas ocasiones («Darkness», «The Promised Land», «Light of Day», «Hearts of Stone»…).
La guinda fueron las sorpresas inesperadas, como la versión rock de «Racing in the Street (’78)», «Leap of Faith» o el estreno mundial de «Leavin’ Train», esa outtake de Human Touch que aparecía en el disco 4 de Tracks. Las dos horas de actuación finalizaron con Bruce en solitario otra vez, con sublimes versiones de «The Wall» y la eterna «Incident on 57th Street».

La noche del viernes llegaron cambios. Tras el arranque acústico Bruce, Joe y los Houserockers (ambas noches acompañados por Eddie Manion -residente en Pittsburgh- al saxo y Rick Witkowski a la guitarra) incorporaron al repertorio «Atlantic City», «Pink Cadillac», «Better Days», «Human Touch», «Lucky Town» y «Save My Love». La despedida acústica llegó con «My Beautiful Reward» y «Jersey Girl».
Un dato curioso: entre las dos noche tocó 5 temas de Human Touch y Lucky Town, sus dos discos de 1992, además de «Leavin ‘ Train», procedente de las mismas sesiones de grabación.
Ahora sí, Springsteen se retira de los escenarios por una temporada. Según algunos asistentes a estos conciertos, se le vio claramente cansado y necesitado de un buen descanso.
Bruce Springsteen dio ayer un revolcón a su repertorio habitual. Abrió el concierto con una inesperada «Clampdown», el temazo de los Clash incluído en el legendario doble álbum London Calling, seguida de «Badlands» y «Johnny 99», en un inicio poco habitual. Siguió con canciones más propias de los bises, como «Stand on It» (estreno en la gira) y una versión de «Seven Nights to Rock»a ritmo de swing, cantada a duo con Patti Scialfa (ausente en conciertos anteriores).
Tras el popular crowdsurfing en «Hungry Heart» llegó otro estreno: «I Wanna Be With You», seguida de otra canción de Tracks, «Back In Your Arms», y la recuperación de «The Promised Land» y «Youngstown». Llegó entonces esa mitad de concierto donde el setlist se vuelve previsible y Bruce ofrece su mejor faceta de entertainer (con «Darlington County», «Shackled and Drawn», «Waitin’ On a Sunny Day»…) solo que… se saltó el guión habitual y no tocó ninguna de esas piezas habitualmente fijas, y en su lugar sonaron «Lonesome Day», «Mary’s Place» y «Radio Nowhere».
En los bises más cambios: «The Promise» al piano seguida de «The Wall» y la furia de «Born in the U.S.A.» (ambas apropiadamente juntas para reforzar el mensaje antibelicista), para luego invitar a la familia Grushecky al escenario (padre e hijo, Joe y Johnny) en una descarga imparable de rock’n’roll («Light of Day», «Frankie Fell in Love» y «Born to Run») antes de continuar con el guión habitual («Dancing in the Dark», «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out» y «Shout») y cerrar con el mantra que crea con «Dream Baby Dream», tocada en solitario al armonio.
Durante la recta final Bruce anunció su participación en dos conciertos con Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers que se celebrarán el 22 y 23 de mayo en el teatro Soldiers & Sailors Hall de Pittsburgh. Será la tercera vez que Bruce toca en estos conciertos con Joe. Las entradas salen hoy a la venta a través de Ticketmaster.
