Charlottesville

Charlottesville had a double shot of Springsteen yesterday: Bruce performed a 6-song acoustic set at the Obama campaign rally, identical to the Ames show last week, including the new song «Forward», now with a few extra lines. Later Bruce moved to the John Paul Jones Arena, where he had a show with the E Street Band.

The band show featured many changes. An unusual opening with «Shackled and Drawn» and «Lonesome Day». A very long segment of 1973 songs, with «Spirit in the Night», «Seaside Bar Song» and «Lost in the Flood», plus the tour debut of «Give the Girl a Kiss». Later in the set, «This Depression» was back, instead of «Jack of All Trades».

«Murder Incorporated» and «Johnny 99» rocked the house before going into festive mood with «Darlington County», «Working on the Highway» and «Waitin’ on a Sunny Day». The rest of the show was full of gems off the Born to Run album. First off an intense «Backstreets» before ending the main set with «Badlands» and «Land of Hope and Dreams». Then «Jungleland» as first encore, and finally «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out» closing the show, with the Clarence Clemons video tribute, which now (since the Hamilton show) also includes images of Danny Federici.

Hamilton

A fan request brought a nice version of «Terry’s Song» at last night’s show in Hamilton, Canada. Bruce had only played it once onstage, in 2009. The show featured a quite standard set , with a rare «I’m A Rocker» opening the encores, that also included «Rosalita». For historians: «Because the Night» included a guitar intro like in 1978.

A message from Bruce Springsteen in support of Obama

Dear Friends:

The election is coming up on all of us and we all have strong feelings about it. I’ve been getting asked a lot about where I stand, so for those who are interested, here goes.

This presidential election is different than the last one because President Obama has a four year record to run on. Last time around, he carried with him a tremendous amount of hope and expectations. Unfortunately, due to the economic chaos the previous administration left him with, and the extraordinary intensity of the opposition, it turned into a really rough ride. But through grit, determination, and focus, the President has been able to do a great many things that many of us deeply support.
