Turku #2

As expected the second show in Turku was radically different from the first. Springsteen offered an intense performance with a more thematic and well-thought set list. He came onstage alone for a magnificent solo acoustic version of «I’ll Work For Your Love», followed by another track from Magic, «Long Walk Home», then two off The River, «The Ties That Bind» and «Out in the Street».

One by one he carefully chose to play some of the most outstanding tracks from various albums: «Atlantic City» from Nebraska, «Blinded by the Light» and «Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?» from Greetings, plus a couple of unexpected rarities: «Ain’t Good Enough For You» (Darkness outtake released on The Promise) and «Wages of Sin», an obscure and delicate Born in the USA outtake available on Tracks, which made its world debut, as it had never before played live. It was sung thanks for the continuous requests from Nicholas, a dedicated fan from Belgium.

Then came the electric fury brought by «Youngstown», «Murder Incorporated» and «Johnny 99», followed by the great swing version of «Open All Night» and the shakin’ rythms of «Shackled and Drawn», of of the few Wrecking Ball songs that stay in the set list. last night’s «Waitin’ On A Sunny Day» featured a young kid who went onstage and instead of singing took out some notes and started rapping!, much to Bruce’s surprise.

A superb «Racing in the Street» as first encore was one of the epic highlights of a show that lasted 2 hours and 52 minutes and finished with «American Land».

Turku #1

The first night in the very small hockey arena in Turku (for only 10.000 people, possibly the smallest venue on the tour), brought back the standard set list, with no full album performed (to the dissappointment of many fans who thought that’d be a rule from now on).

Sign requests picked up by Bruce brought  a few rarities: «From Small Things», «Pink Cadillac» and the tour debut of «Brilliant Disguise». Bruce did crowdsurf again (for only the second time in Europe) during «Hungry Heart». Other highlights from the show include the rarely performed «This Hard Land» and «My Lucky Day».

«Queen of the Supermarket» (another sign request) was done solo acoustic as first encore.

Oslo #2

The second concert in Oslo brought 15 changes, including another surprise opening, with Lucky Town‘s «Leap of Faith» with The E Street Band (last year in Helsinki, Bruce brought out an acoustic version) and closing the shout with «Shout».

European tour begins in Oslo

Bruce Springsteen’s return to Europe began with some surprises. Bruce came on stage an hour earlier than planned, to greet his fans, talk to them and, as a special prize, give them a pre-show acoustic performance that lasted nearly half an hour, as a thank you for their dedication and for being «crazy» (some had been camping out for six days). The gift consisted of an acoustic set full of very unusual songs like «This Hard Land», «All That Heaven Will Allow», «The Fever» and «Growin ‘Up».

Later, with The E Street Band already onstage, Bruce was not the last to appear. He joked that Norway had kidnapped Steve, and then Steve Van Zandt came up onstage dressed as his character in the series Lilyhammer (the mobster Frank «The Fixer» Tagliano), and started singing «My Kind of Town» (popularized decades earlier by Frank Sinatra), as a dedication to the town of Lillehammer.

Then Bruce and Steve shared the mic for an impetuous «Two Hearts», followed by «No Surrender», «Badlands» and «Better Days» before playing the usual trio of songs off Wrecking Ball. There was no crowdsurfing during «Hungry Heart» but the song received a massive audience response, which continued for «Spirit in the Night» and «The E Street Shuffle», the two songs peformed from the early days.

«Follow That Dream» was the other surprise of the night. It was a slow and delicate version, with great work from the magnificent horn section. The ’78 version of «Prove it All Night» brought back the energy, followed by a great «She’s the One», before entering into festive mode with «Pay Me My Money Down» and «Darlington County «, two songs that seem to have earned a fixed spot on the 2013 tour set list.

«Thunder Road» closed the main set, and «For You» opened the encore with Bruce on piano, the calm before the storm that arrived with a thunderous «Born in the USA», followed by «Born to Run», «Dancing in the Dark» and «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out», still including the video tribute to Clarence, now with the addition of more images of Danny Federici.
