Two years after being ‘Person of the Year’ at MusiCares Springsteen came back as a performer this time, to honor Bob Dylan.
Last Friday, Febr. 6th 2015, Bruce, Tom Morello and the gala’s band (formed by Greg Leisz, Benmont Tench, Don Was, Buddy Miller and Kenny Aronoff) performed the classic «Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door» at the Convention Center in Los Angeles (see video at 2:49 for Bruce’s performance).
The third official live download is here: Tower Theatre, Philadelphia 1975. And it’s a blast! A fantastic concert with superb sound, mixed by Toby Scott directly from the original 16-track tapes that was recorded outside the theatre by Jimmy Iovine using the Record Plant Remote unit.
Bruce performed 4 nights at these theatre in Upper Darby, close to Philadelphia, in the last days of 1975, during the Born to Run tour (see extensive info at Brucebase). The show published today is the last one, recorded on New Year’s Eve 1975, blasting off with «Night» and featuring a unique slowed-down version of «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out», tour standards «She’s the One», «Born to Run», «Backstreets» and «Jungleland», plus a bunch of covers including «It’s My Life», «Mountain of Love», «Quarter to Three», «Pretty Flamingo» and «Twist and Shout».
One of the most memorable performances in Springsteen’s career happened exactly 40 years ago at the small Main Point club in Bryan Mawr, Pennsylvania, in a very small venue for only 270 people. The two and a half hour show became legend as it was broadcast live on the radio and has been bootlegged many times over the years.
During a few months between 1974 and 1975 The E Street Band had an additional member: Suki Lahav on violin. She shone on the wonderful performances of «Incident on 57th Street» and Bob Dylan’s «I Want You». Max and Roy were recent additions to the band after David Sancious and Ernest Boom Carter left in the summer of 1974, and Steve Van Zandt wouldn’t join the band until a few months later.
That night’s set list included many songs from Springsteen’s first two albums, plus a few songs that would form part of the yet-to-be-released Born to Run album (including a very early attempt at «Thunder Road», then called «Wings for Wheels»), along with covers of some rock and soul classics, including «A Love So Fine», «Shout» and Chuck Berry’s «Back in the USA» to end the show.

This year’s Light of Day main event was, quite simply, an epic event. It was the 15th anniversary of this great festival, and the main show at Asbury Park’s Paramount Theatre was a magnificent night. Lots of great performances that were highlighted by Bruce Springsteen’s surprise appearance (his 11th in fifteen years).
Bruce performed with Willie Nile, with La Bamba’s Big Band and Southside Johnny (including «Higher and Higher», «This Little Girl» and «I Don’t Wanna Go Home»), solo acoustic (a stripped-down version of «Janey Don’t You Lose Heart») and a full set with Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers (which included Eddie Manion on sax, and lots of highlights: «Hearts of Stone», «Savin ‘Up», «Save My Love», «Darkness on the edge of town», «Because the night», «Racing in the Street (’78)»…).
From the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington on Dec. 7th 2014, here’s Bruce Springsteen singing Sting’s «I Hung My Head». Notice Shane Fontayne playing the guitar with the backing band. Shane was Bruce’s guitar player in 1992-93 during the Human Touch/Lucky Town tour.
