Bruce Springsteen returned to his home turf to begin the last leg of The River Tour 2016. The opening night at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium featured 35 songs and lasted 3 hours and 52 minutes (making this the third longest show ever, just after Helsinki 2012 and Goteborg 2016). The wonderful «New York City Serenade» was the chosen one to begin the show (with a string section onstage).
There were seven songs from The River in a very varied setlist, with songs from all the stages of his career (from «Growin’ Up» to «Land of Hope and Dreams», along with «She’s the One», «Something in the Night», «Mansion on the Hill», «Brilliant Disguise» or «Jack of All Trades»), saying goodbye with the most appropriate «Jersey Girl».
Bruce Springsteen closed the European leg of The River tour with a three and a half hour show in Zürich that surprised all the swiss fans for its lack of songs off The River (only 6) and for the abundance of sign requests that Bruce played, including some nice rarities such as «None But The Brave» (only the seventh live version in 13 years) or the rarely performed «Roll of the Dice» along with «Trapped», «Jole Blon» and «Atlantic City». Other signs taken, and almost played, were «Rendezvous», «Frankie» and «Protection» (which would have been a first, and a unique surprise).
The final hour featured lots of encores, including «Jungleland» and «Ramrod», finishing the show with a long and rousing «Twist and Shout», after Bruce thanked his crew and all the travelling fans who follow him around Europe.
‘Chapter and Verse,’ the audio companion to Bruce Springsteen’s extraordinary forthcoming autobiography, will be released Sept. 23 on Columbia Records. The career-spanning compilation will be released four days before Simon & Schuster publishes ‘Born to Run.’ Five of the album’s 18 tracks have not been previously released.
Springsteen selected the songs on ‘Chapter and Verse’ to reflect the themes and sections of ‘Born to Run.’ The compilation begins with two tracks from The Castiles, featuring a teenaged Springsteen on guitar and vocals, and ends with the title track from 2012’s ‘Wrecking Ball.’ The collected songs trace Springsteen’s musical history from its earliest days, telling a story that parallels the one in the book.
Recordings from Steel Mill and The Bruce Springsteen Band feature musicians who would go on to play in The E Street Band. Solo demos of «Henry Boy» and «Growin’ Up» were cut in 1972 shortly before Springsteen began recording his debut album, ‘Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.’
‘Chapter and Verse’ will be available as a single CD and double LP, as well as via digital download and streaming. The package will include lyrics and rare photos. ‘Chapter & Verse’ will be available for preorder on Friday, July 29.
