Springsteen to receive Ellis Island Award

Today, April 22nd, Bruce Springsteen will receive the Ellis Island Family Heritage Award, because of his European roots, as his family came thru Ellis Island from Italy in 1900. The honor, presented by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc., is for immigrants or their descendants «who have made a major contribution to the American experience. NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams will emcee the event and former Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca, also chairman of the foundation, is presenting the awards. Bruce is not expected to perform at this event, though the organizers say “We’d be thrilled if he came here with a guitar on his back”.

«London Calling: Live in Hyde Park» new Springsteen DVD/Blu-Ray

London Calling: Live in Hyde Park will be released by Columbia Records on June 22nd. The show, filmed at London’s Hyde Park on June 28th 2009, was shot in HD and will be released in two different formats: a Blu-Ray disc and a double DVD. This Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band performance includes 26 song over 163 minutes.

It is surprising that this is the chosen show to represent the Working on a Dream tour, considering it was not really one of the best performances of the tour and Bruce’s voice was particularly soar that night. The shows from the final leg of the tour (including those at Giants Stadium, the Spectrum, MSG or the final night in Buffalo) were simply phenomenal. Maybe the Hyde Park show has been chosen as it’s a more standard, for-the-masses set list and it was shot in HD? Add to this «Rosalita» has been literally amputated from the show.

Back in 2009, Jon Landau said the plans for 2010 included a Working on a Dream tour DVD (Hyde Park) and a Darkness-era box-set, still due.

Bruce Springsteen takes the stage again

Although this year he is not expected to tour, Springsteen jumped on a stage again for the second time this year. It was at Rosanne Cash’s concert in Durham, North Carolina. Springsteen recently contributed to Rosanne’s latest album The List, singing a duet with her on the song «Sea of Heartbreak». Halfway thru her show at Duke University on April 15th she told the crowd: «Usually, I’d say that John Leventhal will be playing the part of Bruce Springsteen; tonight, Bruce Springsteen will be played by Bruce Springsteen». And so both artists sung «Sea of Heartbreak» to a stunned crowd. (See a picture of the show at Backstreets.com)

But this ain’t it: Bruce will be back on a stage very soon. He has been confirmed to join Wes Stace (formerly known as John Wesley Harding) in a special performance with poet Robert Pinsky at Wamfest (Words and Music Festival). They’ll play at a special event called «Words and Music, Perhaps II: A Discussion and Performance». The concert is free, but only available to Duke students.
