Last Saturday Joe Grushecky was playing at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park when his old pal Bruce Springsteen showed up and jumped onstage to play for about two hours. The sweaty small club was packed and Bruce delivered a hot performance.
The setlist was pretty much the same as the Light of Day benefit show held last January at the nearby Paramount Theatre, with some Grushecky-penned songs («Pumping Iron», «Talking to the King» or «Chain Smokin'») and a lot of Springsteen’s (including «Adam Raised a Cain», «Save My Love», «Racing in the Street ’78», «Frankie Fell in Love», «Pink Cadillac» and a great «Because the Night»). E Street Band’s saxman Eddie Manion was part of Joe G’s band.
Joe will be back in Asbury Park in October with a show to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Springsteen-produced album «American Babylon».
La noche del sábado Joe Grushecky actuaba en el Wonder Bar de Asbury Park cuando su amigo Bruce Springsteen apareció por el local y subió al escenario para tocar algunas canciones… durante casi dos horas. El pequeño club, abarrotado de gente, vivió una noche de sudor, emociones y rock’n’roll con una actuación que mostró a un Springsteen en plena forma física y musical.
El concierto fue muy similar al que ofreció con Joe en enero durante el festival Light of Day (celebrado a pocos metros del Wonder Bar), con una mezcla de canciones de Grushecky («Pumping Iron», «Talking to the King» o «Chain Smokin'») y de Springsteen (destacando «Adam Raised a Cain», «Save My Love», «Racing in the Street ’78», «Frankie Fell in Love», «Pink Cadillac» o una espectacular «Because the Night»). El saxofonista de la E Street Band Eddie Manion formó parte de la banda de Joe para esta actuación.
En octubre Joe volverá a actuar en Asbury Park para celebrar el 20º aniversario de la edición de «American Babylon», el álbum producido por Bruce Springsteen que le rescató del anonimato.
Go get it now! It’s a great show from a great tour, and the sound is wonderful. The 6th release from the Bruce Springsteen archives is the Los Angeles April 23rd, 1988 show, right in the middle of the Tunnel of Love Express Tour and the second of 5 consecutive shows in L.A. It is the night Roy Orbison attended and the whole audience sang «Happy Birthday» to him.

La sexta entrega de la colección de directos que Bruce Springsteen publica a través de su página web nos ofrece un concierto de la gira Tunnel of Love Express en 1988, durante su periplo americano. Se trata de una actuación en el Sports Arena de Los Angeles, California, el 23 de abril de ese año, donde Bruce y la E Street Band iban acompañados por la sección de vientos Horns of Love, formada por Mario Cruz (saxo), Eddie Manion (saxo), Mark Pender (trompeta), Richie ‘La Bamba» Rosenberg (trombón) y Mike Spengler (trompeta).
Fue el segundo de una serie de cinco conciertos en la ciudad, en una fase de la gira donde aún tocaba bastantes canciones del entonces nuevo disco, y mantenía la estructura original del tour, con canciones que luego casi desaparecieron durante el periplo europeo de estadios de ese verano (entre ellas «Be True», «Roulette», «Seeds» o «One Step Up»). La grabación ahora ofrecida incluye las versiones de otros artistas que Springsteen estrenó esa noche: «Have Love Will Travel» (de los Sonics) y la apoteósica «Sweet Soul Music» (de Arthur Conley).
A modo de curiosidad, al inicio de la tanda de bises el público cantó el clásico «Happy Birthday» para Roy Orbison, presente esa noche en el concierto.
De esa misma tanda de conciertos en Los Angeles se extrajeron y publicaron hace años versiones de «Tougher Than The Rest» y «Born to Run» (acústica), editadas en maxi-single y CD-Single. De ambas se editaron vídeos oficiales en el recopilatorio (VHS y DVD) The Complete Video-Anthology.
