E Street Band members visit Sunderland school

Saxophonist Ed Manion, keyboard player Charlie Giordano and percussionist Everett Bradley made an impromptu visit at the Barbara Priestman School and Technology College, and performed a gig in front of pupils.

Teacher Emily Landells is a Springsteen and Southside Johnny fan and contacted Ed Manion: “I had spoken to Ed on many occasions over the years, before and after Southside Johnny gigs around the country and knew he was part of Springsteen’s horn section on the Wrecking Ball Tour. I decided to take a long shot and asked him via email if he or any of the other band members would like to visit our school to give a performance”.

Emily said she was left stunned when she received an email confirming not just Ed’s appearance, but two other fellow E Street stars.

Bruce Springsteen will be honored by MusiCares

According to a ShoreFireMedia press release,  Bruce Springsteen will be honored as the 2013 MusiCares Person of the Year on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013. Proceeds from the 23rd annual benefit gala dinner and concert — to be held in Los Angeles during GRAMMY Week two days prior to the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards — will provide essential support for MusiCares (www.musicares.org), which ensures that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical, and personal need. Arranger/composer and nationally renowned music producer Rob Mathes will be the evening’s musical director.

Springsteen is being honored as the 2013 MusiCares Person of the Year in recognition of his extraordinary creative accomplishments as well as his significant charitable work, which has included an impressive range of philanthropic activities over the years.

«Bruce Springsteen is a truly gifted and Renaissance artist of our time, a national treasure, and an exemplary humanitarian,» said Portnow. «His career is a testament to the power of creative excellence, and his contributions as a philanthropist speak to the tenacity of the human spirit. We are privileged and honored to pay tribute to Bruce this year as our MusiCares Person of the Year.»

«Bruce is synonymous with artistic independence and a passion for causes that are close to his heart,» said Pascucci. «His career seamlessly combines inspiration and charity, and it’s a reminder that we can all do our part to make the world a better place.»

The 2013 MusiCares Person of the Year gala will begin with a reception and silent auction offering an exclusive and unparalleled selection of luxury items, VIP experiences and one-of-a-kind celebrity memorabilia for bidding guests. The reception and silent auction will be followed by a dinner, the award presentation and a star-studded tribute concert. The MusiCares Person of the Year tribute ceremony is one of the most prestigious events held during GRAMMY Week. The celebration culminates with the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards at STAPLES Center on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013. The telecast will be broadcast live on the CBS Television Network at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Isle of Wight festival

The second leg of the European tour ended yesterday with a nearly 3-hours long set at the Isle of Wight Festival in the UK, where Bruce rescued back «Lonesome Day», «Atlantic City» and «Because The Night», in a show that ended with «Twist and Shout» in the midst of fireworks. Four songs from the show were aired later on Sky TV («Wrecking Ball», «Death to my Hometown», «Shackled and Drawn» and «Twist and Shout». The first three were also aired in the US via Palladia and VH1 Classics). It’s interesting to note that Bruce’s original set list also included «Prove it all night (78)», though it was dropped in favour of «Because the Night». Next stop: Paris, with two indoor shows at Bercy, on July 4th and 5th.

Manchester

The second stop in the UK featured a great show in Manchester, with plenty of all jewels and rarities, such as «The E Street Shuffle», «Atlantic City», «You Can Look», «Cadillac Ranch», «The Promise» (solo piano) and topping it all, the 1978 version of «Prove it All Night», with its glorious intro, appearing only for the second time on this tour, after it’s debut in Barcelona on May 17th.
