Hanging Rock

Bruce Springsteen said goodbye to Australia with two outdoor concerts at Hanging Rock, with 17,000 people per night and all tickets sold out.

The first show started strongly with «Badlands», «Prove It All Night» and «High Hopes», and was filled with hits and Bruce’s most popular songs such as «Hungry Heart», «The River», «Atlantic City», «Pay Me My Money Down», «Darlington County», «Waitin’ on a Sunny Day», «The Promised Land», «The Rising», «Thunder Road» and «Glory Days» as well as the rarely performed «Tougher Than The Rest», with Australian singer Jimmy Barnes guesting.

An electric solo version of «If I Should Fall Behind» in the encore was followed by a request for «Because the Night», with Bruce doing the guitar solo on this occasion. «My City of Ruins» was left off the set again, and the band was introduced in the middle of «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out».

The second night saw Bruce and the band full of energy for their tenth and last concert in Australia. «Adam Raised a Cain» set the tone for a very strong concert. It was followed with force with «Candy’s Room», «She’s the One» and «Something in the Night». Later came a double dose off The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle album, with «The E Street Shuffle» and «Incident on 57th Street», which included a long solo from Bruce at the end.

The welcome «Tougher Than The Rest» was again sung as a duo with veteran Australian rocker Jimmy Barnes, before rolling into an unstoppable trio formed by «Because the Night», the explosive «Jackson Cage» and «Open All Night».

The encores brought a strong «Born in the USA» followed by the usual «Born to Run», «Dancing in the Dark «and» Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out», then Bruce saying he couldn’t stop and getting into an euphoric «Rosalita» and finally «Twist & Shout».

April will be a month off for the band before their return to Europe on the 29th, in Oslo, with Steve Van Zandt back in the band after the completion of the second season of Lilyhammer.

Melbourne #3

Bruce Springsteen delivered a totally unpredictable show in his third night in Melbourne, changing 17 songs over the previous night, performing songs from a big variety of albums, from Magic to Lucky Town, Darkness, The Wild The Innocent, The River, Greetings, We Shall Overcome, The Rising, Tracks, Born to Run, The Ghost of Tom Joad, Born in the USA, Blood Brothers and Wrecking Ball.

The show began with the epic «Long Walk Home», off Magic, followed by the rock whirlwind of «Radio Nowhere» and «My Love Will Not Let You Down» and the tour premiere of «Better Days» (and first version with the E Street Band since 2003), adding up to 202 different songs performed on this tour so far. After the regular crowdsurfing (during «Out in the Street» this time), surprises kept coming (many via sign requests) with «Factory», an incredible «Lost in the Flood», «High Hopes» and «Does This Bust Stop at 82nd Street?».

Bruce went down to pick up more signs and asked the crowd to choose between «Candy’s Room» and «Incident on 57th Street». The winner was «Candy’s Room», which initiated another guitar attack along with «Youngstown» and «Murder Incorporated», with Bruce, Nils and Tom exchanging solos. «Pay Me My Money Down» made everyone in the audience stand up again. Another sign request brought «I’m Goin ‘Down». The main set ended with standards from the tour, including «The Ghost of Tom Joad» and «Badlands».

With the audience in ecstasy and on their feet, next came an enormous «Jungleland» which fired up the encore section, ending the show with «American Land» after nearly three hours of great intensity.

The Australian tour will end this weekend with two outdoor concerts at Hanging Rock Reserve, just outside of Melbourne.

Melbourne #2

Bruce used his day off on Monday to attend the Zac Brown Band show in Melbourne (Jake even guested onstage with the band). Today he has surprised everyone at this second Melbourne show starting off with «Badlands» with all the house lights still on. The song set the tone for a very rockin’ set which has continued with «We Take Care of Our Own», «Cadillac Ranch», «Wrecking Ball» and «Downbound Train», before getting down in the crowd with «Hungry heart» and «Spirit in the Night».

«My City of Ruins» returns to the set, with the band intros et al, after surprisingly skipping it on Sunday. Other highlights from tonight’s show include «The E Street Shuffle», the rarely played «Red Headed Woman», «Because the Night», «She’s the One» and «Open All Night», which has put everyone on their feet in just 19,2 seconds, according to Bruce.

Back in the encores are «We Are Alive» and «Rosalita», in a show that has had 13 different songs from the previous show and has lasted 3 hours and 8 minutes.
