Springsteen and Joel sing for Obama

Bruce Springsteen performed last night at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom to support Barack Obama‘s campaign. Backed by Billy Joel’s band, Bruce sang some of his own songs, plus various duets with Joel, and one with India Arie and John Legend.

First onstage were India and John, and Bruce joined them in their last song. After that Springsteen sang acoustic solo versions of «The Promised Land» and «This Hard Land». Then it was time for Billy Joel and his band, with Bruce and Patti, and all together they went into «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out», «Thunder Road», «Spirit in the Night» (video), «The Rising», «Glory Days» and «Born to run» (video), plus some of Billy Joel’s songs (Bruce and Billy trading verses) as «River of Dreams», «Allentown» or the classic «New York State of Mind» (video). Springsteen dedicated «Born to Run» to senator Obama. After the musical performances, Senator Obama went onstage for a speech. He called the show «a magical event» and then said: »I was sitting offstage with (wife) Michelle, and I said, ‘Honey, the reason I’m running for president is I can’t be Bruce Springsteen. I can’t be Billy Joel’.»

Southside Johnny live from Paradiso

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the second band to emerge from the ‘Jersey Shore Scene’ in the seventies, following Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band. Southside Johnny (born December 4th 1948 as John Lyon) began his music career as the lead singer of the Blackberry Booze Band, till he met up with his old high school friends and started the Asbury Jukes. With their mix of rhythm & blues blue-eyed soul music they quickly settled their name in New Jersey and they were signed by Epic Records.

Bruce: Let’s take America back!

Bruce Springsteen is back again in support of change. He performed this past weekend in Philadelphia PA, Columbus OH and Ypsilante MI, doing a 45 minute acoustic set each day.

All the shows have featured acoustic versions of «Thunder Road», «The Promised Land» and «No Surrender», among others, in front of large audiences. Every show has ended with Woody Guthrie’s «This Land is Your Land» often mixed with chants of «Yes We Can!».

In Philadelphia Bruce also sang the rare «Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street»; in Columbus it was «Youngstown» and The Byrds’ «Mr.Spaceman» (dedicated to senator and former astronaut John Glenn); and the Michigan audience had the chance to hear «Used Cars» and «Devils & Dust».
