Darkness documentary premieres in Toronto in September

The album Darkness on the Edge of Town will be reissued this year in a commemorative box whose final details have not yet been disclosed. But meanwhile, in a statement released today Springsteen’s publicist has announced the documentary that will accompany the album, directed by Thom Zimny and named «The Promise: The Making of Darkness On The Edge Of Town», will premiere Sept. 14th at the International Film Festival Toronto. Zimny has worked with Springsteen in recent years and was the editor of «Wings for Wheels», the documentary DVD included in the 30th anniversary Born to Run boxset.

Thom Powers, the Toronto Festival’s documentary programer, has commented to Indiewire about the documentary: «You see all the twists and turns of the making of this album. And we’re the first people to announce that this film even existed… It’s been in the works for a couple years now in total secrecy. And we’re very proud to be presenting it«. The film recounts the origins of the songs, its evolution and the recording, based on the artist’s personal videos, never before seen, filmed during rehearsals and recording sessions between 1976 and 1978. It is likely that Springsteen will make an appearance at the Toronto Film Festival.

Always a friend

Bruce Springsteen has participated in the last two albums from Alejandro Escovedo, the Texan singer-songwriter with a nearly-30-year career, and last Friday Bruce made public his admiration and affection for the San Antonio singer once again. Towards the end of Escovedo’s performance at the Stone Pony club in Asbury Park, Bruce made an unnanounced appearance as he took the stage to sing and play guitar on three tracks: «Always a Friend» and «Faith,» both Escovedo tunes, and «Beast of Burden» by The Rolling Stones (a first for Springsteen).
