October 19th: Philly #3

The last leg of the Working on a Dream tour is now anything but a tour of the album where its name comes from. Yesterday, even «Outlaw Pete» was dropped, leaving to just one the count of songs performed from Springsteen’s most recent studio release.

Half of yesterday’s songs were songs Bruce used to perform in 1975, when he had just released the Born to Run album, which was the featured album at the 3rd Spectrum show. The show started with Jackie De Shannon’s fabulous «When You Walk in The Room«, for the first time since its last live appearance on April 8th 1976, just 33 years ago! (it was soundchecked in St.Louis in August of 2008, but wasn’t included in the show). A great way to begin, inmediately followed by thunderous versions of «My Love Will Not Let You Down», «Two hearts» and «Hungry Heart», setting the tone for the night.

After playing the whole Born to Run album and the unavoidable «Waitin’ on a Sunny Day», it was sing-request-time, with «Raise Your Hand», more soulful than ever with great licks from Steven and Curt Ramm on trumpet. The signs brought a great «Saint in the City» and two great surprises: «I Wanna Marry You» (first version since the last show of The River tour in September of 1981), followed by an ‘Elvis medley’ comprised of «All Shook Up» and «Blue Suede Shoes».

The funny thing is that the Elvis request came from an Elvis impersonator, all dressed in white and with cape, who even jumped onstage to sing with Bruce and lead the band. «We have a request from the King!», shouted Bruce before the surreal moment. «Elvis has left the building!… we are truly in Philadelphia!», he exclaimed after the Elvis lookalike left the stage.

The energy level kept going strong with the addition of «Radio Nowhere» and «Lonesome Day». «Land of Hope and Dreams» was back in the encores, as was the music from Rocky before «Rosalita», and a final surprise that used to end some shows on the Born to Run tour: «You Can’t Sit Down».

El último tramo de la gira Working on a Dream se ha convertido en todo menos en la gira del álbum que le da nombre. Ayer, en el tercero de cuatro conciertos en Filadelfia, tocó sólo la canción que da título al disco, eliminando «Outlaw Pete», sin sustituirla por otra canción del disco.

El momento actual de la gira parece más un repaso a los 36 años de carrera del artista, con especial énfasis en su periodo clásico. Cualquier asistente al concierto de ayer en el Spectrum pudo sentirse transportado en el tiempo hasta 1975, cuando Springsteen tocaba en pequeños clubs como el Main Point o el Bottom Line. No en vano la mitad del repertorio lo formaron canciones que ya tocaba cuando se editó el álbum Born to Run, disco al cual se rendía homenaje ayer y que tocó completo. El show se inició con «When You Walk in The Room«, estreno en la gira y primera versión en directo desde el 8 de abril de 1976 (la ensayó antes del concierto de St.Louis de agosto de 2008, pero no llegó a tocarla esa noche). Un inicio emocionante, que seguida del alto voltaje que proporcionan «My Love Will Not Let You Down» y «Two hearts», preparó el ambiente para oir el disco Born to Run en su orden original, otro impacto emocional.

Tras el «Waitin’ on a Sunny Day» de rigor llegó «Raise Your Hand», más soul que nunca con la aportación de la trompeta de Curt Ramm, y la recogida de carteles, que aportaron la infalible «Saint in the City» y tres sorpresas: «I Wanna Marry You», otro estreno en la gira y primera versión en directo desde la gira de The River en 1981, seguida de un medley con dos canciones popularizadas por Elvis Presley: «All Shook Up» y «Blue Suede Shoes».

Lo curioso del caso es que la petición vino de un seguidor disfrazado de Elvis, con capa y traje blanco incluidos. Tras proclamar «¡tenemos una petición del Rey!«, Bruce le invitó a subir al escenario a cantar con él, en una escena divertida y surrealista. El concierto prosiguió con la misma intensidad hasta el final con la recuperación de «Radio Nowhere» y «Land of Hope and Dreams», la música de Rocky antes de «Rosalita», y una sorpresa final para volver de nuevo a los sonidos de la gira de 1975/76: «You Can’t Sit Down».

The private show at the Stone Pony

Bruce Springsteen, accompanied by Bobby Bandiera and his band, Patti Scialfa, Southside Johnny and horns, offered his yearly school benefit show, this time for his son’s college, at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, last Saturday, Oct. 17th.

The song selection ewas nearly identical to that of previous years, with lots of soul and rock covers, original songs and lots of fun, with Bruce even singing «Seven Nights to Rock» from atop the club’s bar.

Concierto privado en Asbury Park

Bruce Springsteen, acompañado por la banda de Bobby Bandiera, Patti Scialfa, Southside Johnny y una sección de vientos, ofreció ayer un concierto benéfico para el Boston College (la universidad donde estudia su hijo Evan James) en el club Stone Pony de Asbury Park, Nueva Jersey.

El repertorio fue prácticamente el mismo que en los conciertos benéficos de años anteriores para las escuelas de sus hijos, con versiones de clásicos del soul y el rock, temas propios y casi dos horas y media de concierto. En el de ayer Springsteen acabó paseándose por la sala y cantando encima de la barra del bar.
