40 years ago: the historic Main Point show

TheMainPointThenmainptceccolaOne of the most memorable performances in Springsteen’s career happened exactly 40 years ago at the small Main Point club in Bryan Mawr, Pennsylvania, in a very small venue for only 270 people. The two and a half hour show became legend as it was broadcast live on the radio and has been bootlegged many times over the years.

During a few months between 1974 and 1975 The E Street Band had an additional member: Suki Lahav on violin. She shone on the wonderful performances of «Incident on 57th Street» and Bob Dylan’s «I Want You». Max and Roy were recent additions to the band after David Sancious and Ernest Boom Carter left in the summer of 1974, and Steve Van Zandt wouldn’t join the band until a few months later.

InsidetheMainpointThat night’s set list included many songs from Springsteen’s first two albums, plus a few songs that would form part of the yet-to-be-released Born to Run album (including a very early attempt at «Thunder Road», then called «Wings for Wheels»), along with covers of some rock and soul classics, including «A Love So Fine», «Shout» and Chuck Berry’s «Back in the USA» to end the show.
