«Summertime Blues», «Badlands», «Prove It All Night» (with guitar intro), «Sherry Darling», «Backstreets», «Quarter to Three»… If you’re familiar with Bruce’s concerts you may quickly think we’re talking about the famous Aug.15th 1978 show in Largo, Maryland. Believe it or not… we’re not.
Bruce played all those songs yesterday, August 15… 2012, at the second and last concert at Fenway Park in Boston. Springsteen digged deep into his magnificent legacy, without abandoning the present with the new songs (he played 6 off Wrecking Ball, including «Land of Hope and Dreams» and «Rocky Ground»), to offer an spectacular three-and-a-half-hour concert with a performance that matched his best European shows. It was, according to Backstreets.com, «a stratospheric performance», full of rarities, with 19 different songs from the previous night.
At 19:36 and under a storm threat, Springsteen took the stage and sang «Thunder Road», in its 1975 version, accompanied only by Roy Bittan’s piano. And then a bag of «summer» songs arrived: «Hungry Heart», «Sherry Darling», «Summertime Blues» and «Girls in Their Summer Clothes», plus an infectious «Two Hearts» in between «We Take Care of Our Own» and «Wrecking Ball».
After the touching «My City of Ruins» came the first sign request, Eddie Floyd’s «Knock on Wood», a perfect moment for the horn section to shine (the song had only been played previously at a 1976 gig in Memphis, with Eddie Floyd guesting with Bruce that night), which would lead to a string of marvelous jewels: «Does This Bus Stop at 82nd St?», «Thundercrack», «Frankie» and «Prove It All Night», again with the 1978 guitar intro. The main set closed with an extraordinary «Backstreets» which included part of Suicide’s «Dream Baby Dream» in the interlude, followed by «Badlands» and «Land of Hope and Dreams».
Bruce opened the encores with another surprise, an acoustic version of «Who’ll Stop The Rain?», followed by the return of «Rocky Ground» (a key song from the new album which deserves a steady spot on the set list). To the usual festive encores Bruce added two classic oldies: «Detroit Medley» and «Quarter to Three» (with Ed Manion on saxophone) giving to the show and even more 70’s feel. «American Land» with Ken Casey of the Dropkick Murphys guesting, was the final song of the night.
15 de agosto… de 1978. Concierto en Largo, Maryland, famosísimo por el vídeo que circula desde hace años. Un concierto legendario, con las maravillas habituales de la época… «Summertime Blues», «Badlands», «Prove it All Night» (con intro de guitarra), «Sherry Darling», «Backstreets», «Quarter to Three»…
Ayer, 15 de agosto de… 2012… sonaron todas esas canciones en el segundo y último concierto en el Fenway Park de Boston. En una nueva vuelta de tuerca a esta sorprendente gira Wrecking Ball, Springsteen recuperó gran parte del magnífico legado de su pasado, sin abandonar para nada el presente con las nuevas canciones (tocó 6 de Wrecking Ball, incluyendo «Land of Hope and Dreams» y «Rocky Ground»), para completar un espectacular concierto de tres horas y media donde electrizó al público norteamericano con una actuación a la altura de las mejores de Europa. Fue un concierto, según Backstreets.com, «estratosférico», repleto de rarezas, interpretaciones especiales y joyas de toda su carrera, y con 19 canciones distintas respecto a la primera noche.
A las 19:36 y con amenaza de tormenta eléctrica, Springsteen subió al escenario y cantó «Thunder Road» en su versión de 1975, acompañado tan solo por el piano de Roy Bittan. Y empezó a continuación a tocar canciones de temátiva estival: «Hungry Heart», «Sherry Darling», «Summertime Blues» y «Girls in Their Summer Clothes». Entre las habituales «We Take Care of Our Own» y «Wrecking Ball» insertó el rock infeccioso de «Two Hearts».
Tras la emotiva «My City of Ruins» llegó la primera petición del público, con la formidable «Knock on Wood» de Eddie Floyd, un tema perfecto para la sección de vientos (y que sólo había tocado anteriormente en 1976, en Memphis y con el propio Eddie Floyd), que daría paso a una impagable racha de perlas: «Does This Bus Stop at 82nd St?», «Thundercrack», «Frankie» y «Prove It All Night», de nuevo con la introducción de guitarra de 1978. El bloque principal del concierto finalizó con una versión extraordinaria de «Backstreets» que incluyó en su parte central parte de «Dream Baby Dream» (la canción de los Suicide con la que solía finalizar las actuaciones en la gira Devils & Dust en 2005), seguida de «Badlands» y «Land of Hope and Dreams».
Siguiendo la tónica de la noche, Bruce sorprendió en los bises con una versión acústica de «Who’ll Stop The Rain?», y el regreso de «Rocky Ground» (un tema clave del último disco, que debería ser fijo). A la fiesta de rock y grandes éxitos con los que acaban los conciertos se sumaron ayer «Detroit Medley», la explosiva «Quarter to Three»(con Ed Manion al saxo) y un bis final, «American Land», con el cantante de Dropkick Murphys como invitado especial.
