Darlene Love’s new album, produced by Steve Van Zandt

She was the main voice on The Crystals’ «He’s a Rebel», produced by Phil Spector, and also sang background vocals on classics like «Be My Baby», «Monster Smash» or «Da Doo Ron Ron». Darlene Love, one of the greatest voices of the 60’s, is back.

Steve Van Zandt promised her in the 80’s (after attending her show in L.A.) to resurrect her career and cut a record with her. It never happened. Until now.

«I finally realized last year there’s never going to be a right time,» Steve told Rolling Stone. «I couldn’t have been busier than I was at the time, but I finally said, ‘Fuck it, I’m pushing this into my schedule.'»

So Steve asked his friends to deliver songs. Elvis Costello immediately sent four songs, and Bruce Springsteen sent two finished demos. The two unreleased songs Bruce contributed are «Night Closing In» and «Just Another Lonely Mile».

Steve Van Zandt, Barry Man & Cynthia Weil, Jimmy Webb, Linda Perry and Joan Jett also wrote some songs for Darlene. The first single, «Forbidden Nights», was written by Elvis Costello and it’s a great pop songs that fits perfectly for Darlene’s voice and style. A video was filmed recently in Asbury Park to promote the song, and includes a cameo with the two prodigal songs from Asbury: Bruce and Stevie.

The release party will be held at the Whisky A Go Go in Los Angeles on September 18th, starring Darlene Love and featuring Little Steven & friends. The album will see the light of day that same day.

Puso la voz principal en el single de The Crystals «He’s a Rebel», bajo la batuta de Phil Spector, e hizo coros en éxitos inolvidables como «Be My Baby», «Monster Smash» o «Da Doo Ron Ron». Es la gran Darlene Love, una de las mejores voces de la música pop y estrella en los años 60.

Pasada su etapa gloriosa, Darlene se retiró y tuvo que aceptar todo tipo de ocupaciones. Steve Van Zandt, fan declarado, le prometió a principios de los 80 grabar un nuevo disco y relanzar su carrera. Pasaron los años y las múltiples ocupaciones del guitarrista de la E Street Band le impidieron cumplir su promesa… hasta que «finalmente el año pasado me di cuenta de que nunca encontraría el momento adecuado», declaró Steve a Rolling Stone, «no podía estar más ocupado que en ese momento, pero finalmente me dije ‘a la mierda, voy a poner esto en mi calendario’.

Así es como Van Zandt inició el proyecto y pidió canciones a sus amigos: «Les dije ‘quiero algo grande’, con vientos y cuerdas. Su voz requiere eso. Y les dije que no íbamos a esperar, así que les dí uno o dos meses de plazo».

Elvis Costello reaccionó de inmediato y le mandó cuatro canciones. Springsteen hizo lo mismo y mando dos temas inéditos totalmente completados: «Night Closing In» y «Just Another Lonely Mile». El resultado, a juzgar por el primer single, es espectacular. 14 canciones hechas a medida de Darlene, incluyendo las antes mencionadas y canciones de Steve Van Zandt, Barry Man y Cynthia Weil, Jimmy Webb o Joan Jett. El álbum saldrá a la venta el 18 de septiembre.

El vídeo-clip de la canción «Forbidden Nights» se filmó en Asbury Park e incluye la aparición de los dos hijos pródigos de la ciudad: Springsteen y Van Zandt, además de Elvis Costello, Bill Murray, Joan Jett o Paul Schaffer. La presentación del disco se hará en el Whisky A Go Go de Los Angeles el 18 de septiembre, y Darlene estará acompañada por Steve más «invitados especiales».
