Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band have delivered today the first of three shows in Sydney this week, in front of 17,703 lucky people. The show has been pretty different from the previous 2-night stand in Brisbane. A shorter set (23 songs in 2 hours and 49 minutes) but no less intense. Surprisingly, many of the songs off the new album that were standards on the tour have disappeared from the set list, and only 3 of them remain («Wrecking Ball», «Death to My Hometown» and «Shackled and Drawn»).
«American Land» was today’s show opener, followed by two powerful songs off the Darkness album: «Prove it All Night» and «Adam Raised a Cain», showing how amazing are both E Street Band guitar players on this Australian tour, Tom Morello and Nils Lofgren. Both delivered impressing solos on «Adam Raised a Cain» and «The Ghost of Tom Joad» (Tom) or «Youngstown» (Nils).
«High Hopes» stays on the set, right after «Spirit in the Night», and before Bruce delivers a storm of rock fury with «Youngstown», «Candy’s Room» and «She’s the One», followed by the Seeger-Sessions-Band-sounding «Pay Me My Money Down» and «Shackled and Drawn» (one of the few Wrecking Ball songs that survives). «The Ghost of Tom Joad» and «Badlands» seem to have been established as show closer, before Bruce gets to encore-time with «Thunder Road», sung by the whole audience (far more alive and enthusiast than the Brisbane audiences, according to reports). «Seven Nights to Rock» was back tonight, before Bruce finished the show with «Dancing in the Dark» and the essential «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out».
Bruce has asked support at this show for «Food Bank NSW, An Australia Without Hunger«, a local food bank.
