Bruce’s first show in Melbourne today has been shorter than usual, with 24 songs over 2 hours and 52 minutes. Only four encores, and «My City of Ruins» (roll call included) dropped from the set.
«Out in the Street», «The Promised Land» and «Something in the Night» kick off the show, which includes the crowdsurfing routine on «Hungry Heart», a great «Spirit in the Night», another energic «High Hopes» and the first 2013 appearances in Australia of «Seeds» and «Land of Hope and Dreams».
Bruce picks up some signs from the audience and shows two of them: «Incident» and «Prove it ’78». The second one is chosen and Bruce rocks the house with the fantastic 1978 version of the song, with its long guitar and piano introduction.
Bruce’s final words today: «I promise it won’t be so long before we are back here again. We are loving it here in Australia».

«Out in the Street», «The Promised Land» y «Something in the Night» han iniciado con fuerza el primer concierto en Melbourne, repleto de los habituales y numerosos cambios de repertorio que Springsteen acostumbra a hacer. «Hungry Heart» ha incluido el habitual paseo por el público, y ha enlazado con «Spirit in the Night», recordando viejos tiempos y calentando al público. «High Hopes» ha elevado la tensión con un gran trabajo de Tom Morello y Everett Bradley y Bruce derrochando energía a raudales. La complicidad entre Bruce y Tom aumenta en cada concierto, y Morello aporta la particular dosis energía y rabia que siempre ha mostrado en sus propios conciertos desde su etapa en Rage Against the Machine.
«The River» ha dado paso a «Seeds» (primera aparición en esta gira australiana y momento en el que Bruce ha brillado con su solo de guitarra) y «Johnny 99», antes de hacer una pausa y recoger algunos carteles, que quedan reducidos a dos opciones: «Incident» o «Prove it ’78». Bruce elige la segunda y arranca la famosa introducción de piano y guitarra. La finalización del tema corre a cargo de Nils Lofgren y otro solo espectacular.
Tras el torbellino de rock Bruce lanza una proclama pidiendo al público de Melbourne que mueva el culo del asiento y se ponga a bailar. 27 segundos después, según el propio Bruce, y con el objetivo conseguido, arranca «Pay Me My Money Down» y el pabellón se convierte en una sala de baile masiva. Al final acaba invitando a seis chicas al escenario para bailar, y directamente empalma con «Darlington County» y la fiesta sigue. El resto del set ha sido bastante standard, hasta la finalización con «Badlands» y «Land of Hope and Dreams» (en su debut en Australia en 2013).
Extrañamente, hoy el concierto ha sido más corto (2 hrs, 52 min.) y los bises han incluído sólo cuatro canciones. «My City of Ruins» ha desaparecido del mapa, con su homenaje a Clarence y Danny y la presentación de toda la banda, algo inaudito hasta hora.
En su despedida Bruce ha elogiado al público australiano y ha jurado volver: «Prometo que no tardaremos tanto en volver aquí de nuevo. No está encantando la vista a Australia».

Sydney’s third and final performance has been nothing but extraordinary. It has been a return to a more classic Wrecking Ball concert set list, similar to those in the first weeks of the tour, opening with «We Take Care of Our Own» and «Wrecking Ball», followed by «Night», «Death to My Hometown» and «Hungry heart» (with crowdsurfing and beer drinking included). After «My City of Ruins», back in its usual spot early in the set, Bruce has been picking sign requests from the crowd, which as a result have brought stellar performances of «Growin’ Up», «The E Street Shuffle», «Prove it all Night» (with ’78 intro) and «Trapped».
A beautiful «The River» was next, before entering into «party-mode» with the contagious «Pay Me My Money Down», «Darlington County», «Working on the Highway», «Shackled and Drawn» and «Waitin’ on a Sunny Day».
The most intense part of the show featured a stunning «Backstreets», then «The Ghost of Tom Joad», «Badlands» and «Thunder Road» to triumphally close the main set. A rousing «Born in the U.S.A.» opened the encore set, which tonight, after «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out» featured an extra song after Bruce picked up a request for «Rosalita» from a Spanish fan.
