Who’ll Stop the Rain?
Yesterdays’ show in Milano, the first of three in Italy, can only be described with one word: epic. It was long, intense, extraordinary. Perhaps, on paper, it wasn’t the most spectacular set list of the tour, nor it had the biggest or oldest rarities, but the energy level from Springsteen and the E Street Band, along with the always enthusiastic italian audience, made it for an explosive combination.
The result was Springsteen’s second longest show ever, with a show that lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes, and a staggering 33 songs performed. The prize for longest show ever still remains for the New Year’s Eve Nassau Coliseum show in 1980, which lasted 3 hours and 45 minutes (of music, the intermission doesn’t count).Up til yesterday, the honor of being the second longest show was for the July 1st, 2000 performance at Madison Square Garden, which clocked in at 3 hours and 36 minutes (The DVD «Live in New York City» comes from that show). Twelve years later, at 62, Springsteen proved he’s in top shape and still can deliver amazing performances, like no one else in show business does nowadays.
The show was full of special moments, with «Spirit in the Night», «The E Street Shuffle», a double performance of «No Surrender» (Bruce and the band had to play it twice due to some mistakes), or the tour debut of the solo piano version of «The Promise». All of it topped with the longest encore of the tour, with 10 songs, including two extras («Glory Days» and «Twist and Shout») after the regular ending with «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out».
Para el concierto de ayer en Milán, primero de la gira italiana, sólo hay un epíteto: épico. Así fue el concierto: largo, intenso, extraordinario. Quizá el setlist no sea el más espectacular de la gira, ni con las mayores rarezas que haya tocado en la misma, pero la desbordante energía de Springsteen y la E Street Band combinada con el increíble entusiasmo que mostraron los fans italianos resultó en una combinación explosiva.
El resultado fue el segundo concierto más largo de su carrera, con 3 horas y 40 minutos de actuación, y 33 canciones interpretadas. Sólo en una ocasión estuvo más tiempo sobre un escenario, en concreto en el Nassau Coliseum de Nueva York la noche de fin de año de 1980: 3 horas 45 minutos de música en uno de sus conciertos más míticos. El segundo más largo hasta ayer era el concierto en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York del 1 de julio de 2000 (parte del cual se publicó en el DVD «Live in New York City»), con 3 horas y 36 minutos de extensión. Que ayer, tantos años después y con 62 años, fuera capaz de hacer tal demostración de vitalidad y entrega tiene valor añadido y muestra un nivel de pasión y compromiso con sus fans que muy pocos artistas llegan a conseguir.
El concierto estuvo plagado de momentos épicos, con «Spirit in the Night», «The E Street Shuffle», la doble interpretación de «No Surrender» (Bruce se equivocó varias veces y tuvieron que repetirla), o el estreno en la gira de la versión al piano de «The Promise». Y para postre, la tanda de bises más larga de la gira, con 10 canciones, dos de ellas («Glory Days» y «Twist and Shout») tras el final habitual con «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out».
El canal 2 de ETB, la televisión pública vasca, emite hoy el programa «Bruce según África» a las 22:15, presentado por África Baeta (presentadora de informativos de la cadena y seguidora confesa de Bruce), con imágenes de los conciertos de Sevilla, Barcelona y Donosti, y entrevistas a fans, periodistas y críticos musicales que hablan sobre Bruce.
Podéis ver en la web de EITB (http://www.eitb.com/es/videos/) el vídeo inédito de la canción «Spanish Eyes», tal como la tocó Springsteen en las pruebas de sonido en San Sebastián el 2 de junio de 2012. Canción escrita en 1977, editada en el doble CD The Promise, y nunca antes tocada en directo. El vídeo se filtró en Youtube hace unos días y ahora se puede ver en exclusiva en EITB.
