The Magic resembles more and more each day the Devils & Dust tour. Not musically, but because of the constant changes and surprises in the set list. There’s a feeling now that you can get to hear anything these days, which makes these shows even more exciting. Yesterday, for the second show in Anaheim, there were 8 set list changes. For the first time, «Devil’s Arcade» and «The Rising» were left off the show.

«Thunder Road» opened the show, followed by an intense hour of non-stop rock’n’roll (except for «Magic»), which included super electric attacks on «Gypsy Biker», «Murder Incorporated», «Atlantic City», «Candy’s Room», «Prove it all Night» (an audible) and «Because The Night», with ten glorious minutes for Nils Lofgren and his marvelous guitar solos. All of this before a frenetic «She’s the One».

Minutes later Tom Morello would jump onstage again, for yet another killer version of «The Ghost of Tom Joad», one of the highlights of the show. «Last to Die» followed, skipping «Devil’s Arcade» and «The Rising» for the first time. «Dancing in the Dark» came back, along with the brilliant duo formed by «Meeting Across the River» and «Jungleland» (with Clarence nailing the sax solo).

La gira Magic cada vez tiene más parecido con la gira Devils & Dust. Los cambios de orden y repertorio son constantes últimamente y la sensación en los conciertos es que cualquier cosa puede pasar. Anoche, en el segundo concierto en Anaheim, sonaron 8 canciones diferentes respecto al primer concierto. Por primera vez en la gira, no toca ni «Devil’s Arcade» ni «The Rising», y el concierto acaba de nuevo con «Out in the Street», tras «Badlands».

«Thunder Road» es la canción de arranque, seguida de una racha incesante de rock’n’roll (con la sola parada de «Magic»), donde «Murder Incorporated», «Atlantic City» y «Candy’s Room» preceden a «Reason to Believe», seguida en esta ocasión de dos trallazos que pocas veces suenan en el mismo concierto: «Prove it all Night» y «Because The Night», diez minutos de gloria para Nils Lofgren y sus arrasadores solos de guitarra. Todo esto culminado con la sacudida final de «She’s the One». Una primera hora de concierto de alto voltaje.

Minutos después subía al escenario de nuevo Tom Morello para otra escalofriante versión de «The Ghost of Tom Joad», sin duda uno de los momentos álgidos del concierto. Tras ella empieza a sonar «Last to Die», quedando fuera del repertorio tanto «Devil’s Arcade» como «The Rising», hasta ahora temas fijos en cada concierto. Para los bises recuperan «Dancing in the Dark» y el magnífico duo formado por «Meeting Across the River» y «Jungleland» (con Clarence, ahora sí, bordando el solo de saxo).

Una de las cosas que dejó un sabor agridulce fueron los comentarios de Bruce sobre Danny Federici. En lugar del habitual «Danny manda recuerdos y esperamos verle pronto por aquí», Springsteen dijo «We send Danny all our love and hope that you’ll keep him in your prayers» («le mandamos todo nuestro cariño a Danny y esperamos que recéis por él»), dejando algunas dudas en el aire sobre el estado de salud de Danny. A todo esto se añadió el letrero que mostró Max al público al final del concierto («We Love Danny»).
