Bruce Springsteen anuncia su apoyo a Barack Obama

Mediante una carta publicada en su página web, Bruce Springsteen hizo ayer oficial su apoyo al candidato demócrata Barack Obama.

En la carta Springsteen afirma: «El senador Obama, desde mi punto de vista, está muy por encima de los demás (…) Creo que el senador Obama es el mejor candidato para liderar ese proyecto y guiarnos en el siglo 21 con un renovado sentido moral. (…) Aquí en la calle E, nos sentimos orgullosos de apoyar a Obama para Presidente».

Cadillac, Cadillac…

Cadillac Ranch, in Amarillo, Texas, was created in 1974 by eccentric millionaire Stanley Marsh. The site inspired Springsteen in 1980 to write the song «Cadillac Ranch». Yesterday in Houston, this was the choosen song to open a very special show. Both «Gypsy Biker» and «Reason to Believe» dissapear for one night, being substituted by «Atlantic City» and «Because the Night». «She’s the One» was followed by a rockin’ «Out in the Street».

Later in the set, in the middle part, where anything can happen, «Girls in their Summer Clothes» was followed by a fan-request of «The E Street Shuffle» and, for the first time ever, «Terry’s Song», the song that closes Magic, which was written in honour of long-time Springsteen friend Terry Magovern («A friend of mine for 23 years… today would have been his 68th birthday»). «Thunder Road» closed the main set this time.

The encores had some special treats waiting. First, Springsteen announced «I’ve always been a fan of the Texas songwriters», and invited Austin songwriter Alejandro Escovedo onstage to sing «Always a Friend» (see video below), a brilliant song off Alejandro’s forthcoming new album Real Animal. Escovedo has been fighting for years (with good results) a very serious case of hepatitis C, and is coming back with a new album and signing with Jon Landau management.

After that, it was the turn for another Austin songwriter, the great Joe Ely, who sang «All Just to Get To You», off his excellent album Letter to Laredo (where Springsteen himself contributes vocals on two songs). After such special moments, an explosive «Rosalita» was followed by «Born to Run» and an exciting «Tenth Avenue Freeze-out», with Bruce hanging down from the mic stand for quite a while. «American Land» put an end to a fabulous show.

El rancho Cadillac, en Amarillo, Texas, fue creado por un excéntrico millonario tejano en los años 70. En 1980 Springsteen inmortalizó el lugar en su canción «Cadillac Ranch». Ayer, en Houston, ésta fue la canción elegida para dar inicio a un concierto trepidante. Del repertorio habitual desaparecen, al menos por una noche, «Gypsy Biker» y «Reason to Believe», sustituidas por «Atlantic City» y «Because the Night». A «She’s the One» le siguió una encendida versión de «Out in the Street».

Ya en la parte central del concierto, donde Springsteen suele cambiar canciones a diario, sonaron «Girls in their Summer Clothes», «The E Street Shuffle» y, por primera vez, «Terry’s Song», la canción que cierra el álbum Magic, escrita en homenaje a Terry Magovern, amigo de Springsteen y su asistente personal durante muchos años. Ayer Bruce la cantó en el día en que Terry hubiera cumplido 68 años. Tras las habituales cinco canciones finales (de «Devil’s Arcade» a «Badlands»), se añadió «Thunder Road» al quinteto, cerrando el concierto.

Llegados los bises, Springsteen anuncia «siempre he sido un gran fan de los cantautores de Texas», y a continuación invita al escenario a su amigo Alejandro Escovedo para cantar «Always a Friend», canción que formará parte del nuevo álbum de Alejandro, titulado Real Animal. Escovedo superó recientemente una grave hepatitis, y regresa ahora, tras años de lucha contra la enfermedad, con un brillante nuevo disco y firmando con Jon Landau como mánager. Tras Alejandro le toca el turno a Joe Ely, también de Austin (Texas), quien sube para cantar con Bruce «All Just to Get To You», canción de su excelente álbum Letter to Laredo (en el cual el propio Springsteen cantaba en dos canciones). Tras esos minutos especiales con sus amigos, Springsteen se embarca en una delirante «Rosalita», seguida de «Born to Run» y «Tenth Avenue Freeze-out», con Bruce colgado durante un buen rato cabeza abajo del soporte del micrófono. «American Land» puso punto final a un concierto largo, intenso y especial. Finalizado el concierto, Alejandro Escovedo confesaba a la revista Backstreets: «ha sido la mejor experiencia musical de mi vida».

Concierto en Dallas

Dos horas y medio y un estreno en la gira fue lo que vivieron ayer en Dallas. Como viene siendo habitual, el concierto empezó con una canción distinta: en este caso «Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out».

«Girls in their summer clothes» pasó de los bises a la mitad del concierto, tras «The Promised Land», y le siguió el estreno de «Independence Day», con Nils tocando la pedal steel, en una versión similar a la original del álbum The River.

«Meeting Across the River», de nuevo seguida de la imponente «Jungleland», abrió los bises, durante los cuales apareció el segundo roquero más famoso de New Jersey, Jon Bon Jovi, para cantar una estrofa de «Glory Days». En «Dancing in the Dark» Bruce invitó a bailar a cinco niñas que estaban en primera fila, lo cual aprovecharon algunos para saltar a la tarima (hasta que seguridad puso orden), siendo 17 las personas que durante unos instantes estaban bailando sobre el escenario.

Entradas Milwaukee: hoy se ponen de nuevo a la venta las entradas para el concierto en Milwaukee del 30 de agosto (Festival 105 Aniversario de Harley-Davidson), tras el fracaso de la venta hace unos días, cuando reventó la web de Harley y se tuvo que anular la venta a los pocos minutos (¿no decíamos que esto sólo pasaba en España?). Hoy las entradas, para evitar nuevas sorpresas, se venderán a través de Ticketmaster.
