RIP Robbin Thompson (1949-2015)

220171-steelmill-advert-bc8We’re saddened to hear former Steel Mill singer Robbin Thompson died on October 9th after a long battle with cancer.

Bruce Springsteen met Robbin in Richmond in 1970 after seeing him sing with his band Mercy Flight. He quickly recruited him for his hard-rock band Steel Mill (two years before Springsteen would go solo and start a successful career). Robbin sang with Springsteen, Van Zandt, Federici and Vini Lopez from August 1970 until January 1971, when Bruce disolved the band.

They kept in touch over the years and Thompson joined Springsteen onstage several times (in 2008 and 2013). Even back in August of 1981 Bruce went to see his buddy at a small club in Washington DC and ended up jumping onstage to sing Chuck Berry’s «Carol».

40 years ago: the historic Main Point show

TheMainPointThenmainptceccolaOne of the most memorable performances in Springsteen’s career happened exactly 40 years ago at the small Main Point club in Bryan Mawr, Pennsylvania, in a very small venue for only 270 people. The two and a half hour show became legend as it was broadcast live on the radio and has been bootlegged many times over the years.

During a few months between 1974 and 1975 The E Street Band had an additional member: Suki Lahav on violin. She shone on the wonderful performances of «Incident on 57th Street» and Bob Dylan’s «I Want You». Max and Roy were recent additions to the band after David Sancious and Ernest Boom Carter left in the summer of 1974, and Steve Van Zandt wouldn’t join the band until a few months later.

InsidetheMainpointThat night’s set list included many songs from Springsteen’s first two albums, plus a few songs that would form part of the yet-to-be-released Born to Run album (including a very early attempt at «Thunder Road», then called «Wings for Wheels»), along with covers of some rock and soul classics, including «A Love So Fine», «Shout» and Chuck Berry’s «Back in the USA» to end the show.

The complete set list:
Incident On 57th Street
Mountain Of Love
Born To Run
The E Street Shuffle
Thunder Road «Wings for Wheels»
I Want You
Spirit In The Night
She’s The One
Growin’ Up
It’s Hard to be a Saint in the City
Jungleland
Kitty’s Back
New York City Serenade
Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)
4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)
A Love So Fine / Shout
For You
Back in the U.S.A.

Incident On 57th Street
Mountain Of Love
Born To Run
The E Street Shuffle
Thunder Road «Wings for Wheels»
I Want You
Spirit In The Night
She’s The One
Growin’ Up
It’s Hard to be a Saint in the City
Jungleland
Kitty’s Back
New York City Serenade
Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)
4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)
A Love So Fine / Shout
For You
Back in the U.S.A.
