Kitty goes to Cali

Second night in L.A.: Halloween night. Like in 1980: disguised band members bring a coffin onstage in the middle of smoke. An arm comes out of it, they bring a guitar and Bruce comes out of the coffin and the show starts. A show with a few changes from the first night in L.A., incorporating "The Ties That Bind", "Night" and "Tunnel of Love", plus an important tour premiere: "Kitty's Back" in the place of "Thundercrack".

Second Night in Oakland

An enthusiastic audience in Oakland got three tour premieres: "Two Hearts" (right before "She's the One"), "Racing in the Street" and "Working on the Highway". After a little rest, "Thundercrack" is back in the encores. "Tunnel of Love" returns too.

Everything from the original handwritten set list was performed tonight, without any last-minute changes.

Spirits over Chicago

With six different songs from the first night, Springsteen came back to the arena with the full E Street Band, including Patti Scialfa. Three tour premieres: "Tunnel of Love", "Spirit in the Night" and, as first encore, an audible "Thunder Road" (in the place of both "Girls" and "Thundercrack"). But it wasn't just another tiring version of "Thunder Road". According to attendees, it was played with energy and dedicated to the young people in the audience (contrary to previous US tours, there seems to be quite a number of young new fans at these shows).

The handwritten set list (See) included "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "I'll Work For Your Love" (would have been a first), though they were dropped in favor of "Candy's Room" and "Darlington County".

First night in Chicago

Patti was absent last night, which meant Soozie took her spot on the stage and sang "Magic" with Bruce. "Patti sends her regards... it's a kids thing, that's all I can tell you" joked Bruce. Second tour appearances of "Your Own Worst Enemy", "Backstreets" and "Cadillac Ranch". Not bad at all for a first night! Chicago, watch out tonight!

Jon Stewart... and Bruce Springsteen

Down in... New York City

Photo: Philadelphia 6.10.2007 copyright Ruben García

As usual, the second night in a row proves to be a special night. Night #2 at the Garden featured another hot performance, with two great tour debuts: "Meeting Across the River" followed by "Jungleland", with Clarence Clemons nailing the sax solo. Many guests at the show, some on the audience (DJ Howard Stern or singer Bette Midler), and some onstage, like a good part of the Seeger Sessions Band who joined the E Street Band, for "American Land", with Lisa Lowell (vocals), Jeremy Chatzky (bass), Larry Eagle (percussion), Charlie Giordano (piano) and Greg Liszt (banjo).

The handwritten set list included "Cadillac Ranch" (finally subtituted for "You Can Look" ) and "Ramrod"... in place of "Thundercrack"! Fortunately, "Thundercrack" stayed on his encore spot (will this still happen when the tour reaches Europe? This is a bad sign...).

Magic arrives to NYC

The first night at the glorious Madison Square Garden featured an intense concert. No tour premieres, but a hot show that's getting better and better each night. Celebrities in the audience included James 'Tony Soprano' Gandolfini, Bono, Jesse Malin and The Killers. Bruce remembered his 1973 shows at Max's Kansas City where he used to close the shows with "Thundercrack".

Cover Me: Bruce Springsteen in Rolling Stone

This week's Rolling Stone features Bruce on the cover. "Bruce Springsteen's Restless Heart", shows the cover. Inside there's an interview with the artist, done by Joe Levy in Asbury Park (read).

"Lately, I've had a little romance with my oldest stuff" he says. "There was a lot of freeness in it. When you start and when you finish — that's when the pressure is off. In the beginning, you're too unknown, you're not really competing with people. And at this point, I'm not competing with 50 Cent or trying to get on MTV. I'm playing for myself and my band and my audience."

In the UK, MOJO magazine has given 5 stars to the album Magic, reviewed by Keith Cameron. The magazine considers the new record "an instant classic".

At Springsteen's official web site you can now see a video of "State Trooper", as performed in Ittawa with Arcade Fire. Of course, with excellent sound and picture quality.

Bruce & Arcade Fire

Bruce Springsteen's busy weekend

This has been a busy weekend, both for Bruce Springsteen and Max Weinberg. First, they both performed last saturday at a benefit concert in Middletown, New Jersey. The show, organized by Max for the Montmouth County SPCA, featured the Max Weinberg Seven plus, at the end of the show, special guest Bruce Springsteen. The songs performed with Bruce were "Seven Nights to Rock", "634-5789", "From Small Things", "Kansas City", "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out" and "Twist and Shout", in front of 500 people. The show was dedicated to the memory of Terry Magovern.

On Sunday, Bruce was back on his Magic tour with the E Street Band, in the city of Ottawa, Canada. The show included 4 tour debuts; "Tougher than the rest", "Backstreets", plus a special surprise during encore time: two members of indie band Arcade Fire joined onstage for "State Trooper" (a song the canadian band has performed in concert) and "Keep the Car Running" (from Arcade Fire's latest album Neon Bible).

...and Bruce raised a Cain

4 tour premieres, 3 songs live on VH1, plus the hottest performance of the tour so far. Bruce and the band were at their best, and delivered the goods: a hot "Adam Raised a Cain" preceded "She's the One", plus the 2nd ever live performance of "Cynthia", a rockin' "You Can Look" and, (finally!) the live debut of "Your Own Worst Enemy" (c'mon Bruce! bring out "I'll Work For Your Love" and "You'll Be Comin Down"!).

Add to this the usual, fantastic versions of "Night", "Reason to Believe", "Last to Die", "Incident on 57th Street" or "Thundercrack" and you have a fabulous show.

Second show added in Oakland, on sale 10/15

A second show, for Thursday Oct.25th at the Oracle Arena, has been added in Oakland. Tickets will go on sale 10/15 at 10am (PST) thru Live Nation's website.

Springsteen plays first show for homestate crowd

A big contrast last night: Bruce and the band delivered a great amount of energy from the stage, while their homestate audience was basically quietly sitting. A great performance, with a great setlist, though the most interesting parts of it ("Incident on 57th Street", "Backstreets", "You Can look") were skipped in favour of "Brilliant Disguise" and "Darlington County" (exactly as in Philly Night #1). Still, a great show.

VCR Alert! Today is an all-Springsteen day at VH1. They're broadcasting (24 hours) many Springsteen specials and concerts, PLUS a live broadcast from tonight's show at CAA.

Philadelphia Special II

'She's the One' (6.10.2007)

'Night' (6.10.2007)

'Last to die' (6.10.2007)

Philadelphia Special

Two nights, two shows, many surprises. Just 3 shows into the tour, Bruce has proved he can nail a show this early on the tour. If the first night had a great start but an uneven flow with some low points in the middle of the set (the trio formed by 'Brilliant Disguise', 'My Hometown' and 'Darlington County'), the second night featured a tremendous set list, combining old and new, classic and modern, and without any low points. Since the opening chords of 'Night' it was clear the energy level was really high, and Bruce delivered all the goods: 'The Ties That Bind', 'Prove it all night', 'Incident on 57th Street' (which was stunning and mind-blowing), 'Cadillac Ranch' (possibly his best, most rockin' version ever), 'Dancing in the Dark' and the usual, fiery versions of 'She's the One', 'Last to Die', 'Badlands' or 'Thundercrack'. It's just the third show of the tour, and it's as good or better than the best of the Rising tour gigs.

Check out the complete set lists.
