Dublin & Belfast

Bruce Springsteen ended his fantastic 2006 tour with three shows in Dublin and one in Belfast. The 3-night stand at The Point in Dublin was filmed by a camera-crew (of at least 9 or 10 cameras), hopefully for a future DVD release.

Night 1 was quite standard, with a good, solid performance in front of a very quiet audience. Not the best show of this tour, for sure.

Night 2 was quite a change: the audience got into the show very quickly and responded greatly, singing, dancing and chanting. Bruce and the band delivered a superb performance, full of energy, with the added bonus of two great tour premieres: "Highway Patrolman" and a beautiful "Shenandoah" as first encore.

The final night was explosive. Again a full-force Seeger Sessions Band delivered their best. Bruce was also on fire from the beginning. The audience was in ecstasy. The tour debut of "For You" rocked the place. (Early on, and because of the rain, the audience was let in during soundcheck time, allowing everyone to hear "For You" and "Mansion on the Hill"). One of the highlights of the show was "The Ghost of Tom Joad", sung beautifully by Bruce and Frank Bruno. "We Shall Overcome" was the first encore ("the song that started it all", said Bruce). Later on, before "When the Saints go marchin' in" Bruce thanked the band and said "we'll be doing this again in the future".

Finally, on tuesday, the tour came to an end in Belfast. Springsteen's sons Evan and Sam came onstage to announce: "Ladies and Gentlemen, Bruce Springsteen and the Seeger Sessions Band!". Later on, Jessica joined her brothers onstage during "Pay Me My Money Down". The Belfast show featured another tour debut: "Mansion on the hill", in a familiar version. "For You" was performed again, and "We Shall Overcome" was the song choosen to finish the show and the tour. In Bruce's own words: "This is sort of a finale for a little while. This has been one of the nicest musical experiences of my life".

Sheffield

After weeks of trying it out at soundchecks, "Youngstown", quite appropriately, made its tour debut in Sheffield. Tonight's show has featured a lot of Springsteen-penned tunes, including "Blinded", "Growin' Up", "The River", "Adam Raised a Cain" "Atlantic City" and "Devils & Dust". And for the first time in a long time, "Bring 'Em Home" is back on the set.

Does this bus stop at Wembley?

The Springsteen bus stopped, indeed, at Wembley. Twice. Two excellent, solid performances with some surprises. On the first night, the debut of a newly written Springsteen song (still "a work in progress", as he indicated) called "Gonna Be A Long Walk Home". The show once again opened with the funky, very E-Street-Shufflesque version of "Blinded by the light", and closed with "Froggie Went-A-Courtin".

Second night had a few more surprises. A tour premiere ("Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?") and two rarities: "Land of Hope and Dreams" and "Man in the Flying Trapeze", both on the encores.

There's a rumour flying around that the Dublin shows might be filmed for future release.

Bruce & Lucinda

Lucinda Williams had a very special guest last night during her spectacular London show at Shepherd's Bush Empire: "Mr. Bruce Springsteen". He came onstage for the last couple songs and played electric guitar in the old delta blues "Disgusted", by Lil' Son Jackson, and the closing number: an extended, electrifying "Joy", with great guitar solos by Bruce. Lucinda introduced Springsteen several times, and look visibly thrilled.

As her only encore, Lucinda played "West", the title track from her forthcoming album (to be released in February 2007). The whole show was incredible, with a fantastic band and very inspired performances of Lucinda's best songs.

Nils Lofgren guests at Birmingham show

Tonight's show at the NEC Arena in Birmingham has featured a nearly identical set list than the previous show in Belgium (except for the first encore: "My City of Ruins" instead of "Fire", and the extra encore of "Froggie Went A-Courtin'"). "Blinded by the Light" opens the show again. Tonight, though, an E Street Band member joined the Seeger Sessions Band: Nils Lofgren, which was up onstage during "Pay Me My Money Down". Nils is currently touring the U.K.

Back on the road

The third and final leg of the Seeger Sessions Tour started yesterday with a show at the magnificent Kölnarena in Köln, Germany (see photo), which opened with "Atlantic City".

Tonight's concert in Antwerp, Belgium, started with the tour debut of "Blinded by the Light", in a set that also has included "Jesus Was An Only Son" and "Fire". This is the final stop in the continent. The tour moves now to the UK & Ireland islands, with shows in Birmingham, London (2), Sheffield, Dublin (3) and a final farewell gig in Belfast on November 21st.
