Bruce Springsteen sent some time at the Manasquan beach last Saturday, and ended up playing somebody’s guitar. A child with an electric guitar plugged in and played a bit of «Smoke on the Water». Bruce Springsteen showed his most soulful side last Sunday in Asbury Park, at an extraordinary tribute concert at the Wonder Bar. The reason: a tribute to Clarence Clemons by The Sensational Soul Cruisers, accompanied by vocalist JT Bowen, former singer of Clarence Clemons’ Red Bank Rockers in the early 80’s. After a break from the band, Springsteen joined them during the second set and one by one performed on some of the best songs in the history of soul: «634-5789», «Sweet Soul Music», «Ain’t Too Proud to Beg», «Shake», «You Can’t Sit Down», «Knock on Wood», «Raise your Hand» and two Springsteen-penned tunes: «Savin ‘Up» (which Clarence recorded and released) and the rare «Action in the Streets», occasionally performed on the short 1977 tour.

La faceta más soul de Bruce Springsteen asomó la cabeza ayer en un extraordinario concierto en el mítico Wonder Bar de Asbury Park. El motivo: un homenaje a Clarence Clemons a cargo de los Sensational Soul Cruisers, acompañados del vocalista J.T. Bowen, el que fuera cantante de los Red Bank Rockers de Clarence Clemons en los primeros años 80. Tras un descanso de la banda, Springsteen se unió al grupo y uno a uno cayeron algunos de los mejores temas de la historia del soul: «634-5789», «Sweet Soul Music», «Ain’t Too Proud to Beg», «Shake», «You Can’t Sit Down», «Knock on Wood», «Raise your hand» y dos temas del propio Bruce: «Savin’ Up» (que Clarence grabó y publicó) y «Action in the Streets», canción aún inédita que sólo había sonado ocasionalmente en la gira de 1977.
