En una entrevista publicada hoy en el diario El País, el director del Teatro Price de Madrid afirma estar negociando«un concierto acústico de Bruce Springsteen». Aunque ni Springsteen ni sus representantes han anunciado ninguna gira ni ningún disco nuevo, se rumorea desde hace algunos meses que el artista podría hacer una gira mundial este año. ¿Volverá Springsteen para presentar un disco en solitario en teatros? Sería, sin duda, una gran noticia, aunque por el momento debemos tomarla con todas las reservas y esperar a un comunicado oficial.
Despite being a year without an official tour, 2010 has been no lost year for Bruce Springsteen. Two new titles have been added to his already extensive discography (Live in Hyde Park and the impressive boxset The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story) and he’s kept his public profile alive, with several appearances in charity concerts and television programs. On Saturday, January 15th, Springsteen joined again the Light of Day benefit festival, guesting with Jesse Malin, Willie Nile and Alejandro Escovedo, and performing for nearly two hours with Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers. The concert was a far cry from his regular appearances at clubs as a guest artist. The precedent for this performance can be found two months earlier, in Pittsburgh.
On November 4th and 5th Springsteen was the special guest at the special anniversary concerts by Joe Grushecky in Pittsburgh, his hometown. It was the 15th anniversary of the release of American Babylon, the 1995 album produced by Bruce Springsteen that brought Grushecky’s career back. That album had the inestimable help of his friend from New Jersey, who took command of the record production, performing and co-writing many of the songs on the album.
The Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall is a splendid classical theater at the University of Pittsburgh, with capacity for 2,300 people. It goes without saying that tickets sold out in minutes for both nights. You could feel that a good part of the audience were Springsteen fans. When he came on stage the audience exploded. He surprised everyone when he announced himself as ‘the opening act’, then performing amazing acoustic versions of «A Good Man is Hard to Find (Pittsburgh),» «For You» and «This Hard Land.»
He left the stage after introducing Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers. Two songs into the set Springsteen joined the party and gradually took complete control of the night, acting as a singer, guitarist and frontman. Bruce was in great shape, eager and full of energy and joy, which he spent in abundance. He nailed the vibrant guitar solos of «Never Be Enough Time» and «Another Thin Line», walked in the front row interacting often with the audience, inviting them to sing and participate. A show in such a small and beautiful theatre offered an intimacy that is rarely seen on his massive stadium tours.
The Houserockers looked thrilled and let Springsteen lead the show. Along with classic Grushecky tunes («Homestead», «American Babylon», «Talking to the King,» «Pumpin ‘Iron» or «Down the road apiece») there were quite a few Springsteen songs, with considerable emphasis on the Darkness era, with «Adam Raised a Cain», «Fire,» «The Promised Land» or «Darkness», along with the recent «Save My Love», undoubtedly one of the highlights of the show, with its long and effective guitar ending that gives new life to the song. After the final «Twist and Shout» de rigueur, Bruce again closed the night alone, with a heartfelt rendition of «Thunder Road.»
The second night Bruce was the ‘opening act’ again, opening with beautiful acoustic versions of «Your Own Worst Enemy», «Bobby Jean», «I’m On Fire» and «This Hard Land.» The concert with the Houserockers was almost identical, with minor changes. Namely: «Johnny 99», «Pink Cadillac», «Light of Day», «Glory Days» and «Burning Love.» The conclusion we draw is that Springsteen is eager to play live again and recent insider infos point to a tour in 2011.
Fast forward two months and we are now in Asbury Park, where the Light of Day festival runs for 3 days, to raise money for the research of a cure for the Parkinson disease. More than 70 bands play for 3 days at different venues in the re-born Asbury Park (now full of clubs, bars and restaurants along its famous boardwalk).
The highlight came Saturday night at the beautiful Paramount Theatre, located at the beginning of the boardwalk in Asbury Park. After several opening acts it was the turn for Jesse Malin, possibly the best performance of the night. Accompanied by a solid, strong band, Jesse electrifyed the audience from minute one, and ended his magnificent performance with «Broken Radio», sung as a duet with Springsteen himself, who made his first appearance of the night. Willie Nile was next with his usual amount of passion and energy and, again, Springsteen joined at the end of his set, for a long version of «Heaven Help the Lonely.»
Alejandro Escovedo was next up on stage, this time for an acoustic set with his guitar player David Pulkingham. And once again Springsteen joined the stage, this time for the song «Always a Friend». What happened next was probably Bruce’s best performance at Light of Day ever. Joe Grushecky was due next, but once again, as they did in Pittsburgh, Bruce appeared onstage with his acoustic guitar to act as the opener for Joe, and delivered a beautiful, majestic version of «Your Own Worst Enemy», followed by «This Hard Land.»
With Joe and the Houserockers onstage, we got a repeat of the Pittsburgh shows from last November, with a nearly identical set list (just a bit shorter). Springsteen led the show and was very enthusiastic for the next 90 minutes. The highlight was the debut of a wonderful rendition of «One Way Street» from The Promise boxset. «Thunder Road» was again chosen to close the night, with an unforgettable version sung by all the artists onstage and the whole audience.
A pesar de ser un año sin gira oficial, el 2010 no ha sido un año vacío para Bruce Springsteen. Además de añadir dos nuevos títulos a su ya extensa discografía (Live in Hyde Park y The Promise) Bruce ha mantenido su perfil público en activo, con diversas apariciones en conciertos benéficos y en programas de televisión. El sábado 15 de enero el artista se unió de nuevo, y sin previo aviso, al elenco del festival benéfico Light of Day, con una actuación de casi dos horas acompañado por Joe Grushecky y sus Houserockers. Fue un concierto muy distinto a sus habituales apariciones en clubs como artista invitado. El precedente lo encontramos dos meses antes, en Pittsburgh.
El 4 y 5 de noviembre Springsteen fue el invitado especial de los conciertos de aniversario de Joe Grushecky en Pittsburgh, su ciudad natal: se cumplían 15 años de la edición de American Babylon, el disco que resucitó la carrera de Grushecky. Ese álbum contó con la inestimable colaboración de su amigo de Nueva Jersey, quien se puso al mando de la grabación, produciéndola, dirigiéndola y colaborando en casi todos los temas (llegando a co-escribir varios de ellos).
Cuando a mediados de octubre recibimos un correo del propio Joe invitándonos a los conciertos nos los pensamos un rato: ¿valdría la pena el viaje? Quizá sí, habiendo sido su discográfica en España durante más de una década y tras haber organizado todas sus giras en la península. Cuando al día siguiente nos confirmó que contaría con la presencia de su amigo de Nueva Jersey se disiparon todas las dudas. ¿La crísis? De perdidos al río; sólo se vive una vez y no hay tiempo para arrepentimientos. Con la excusa del viaje a Pittsburgh nos plantamos en Nueva York dos días antes, a tiempo para disfrutar de la ciudad y ver el concierto benéfico Stand Up For Heroes, donde Bruce arrolló durante casi media hora con versiones de «Kitty’s Back» y «Open All Night» con la inmensa Max Weinberg Big Band. Una gozada breve pero intensa (unos días después, y por pura casualidad y ‘perfect timing’, vimos a Max y su banda en un pequeño teatro de Nueva Jersey, comprobando lo maravillosamente bien que tocan y lo versátil y preciso que es Max, bestia parda de la batería).
El Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall es un espléndido teatro clásico en la zona universitaria de Pittsburgh, con capacidad para 2.300 personas. No hace falta decir que las entradas se agotaron en minutos para las dos noches. En el ambiente se palpaba que una buena parte del público lo formaban seguidores de Springsteen. Cuando éste salió al escenario la platea explotó. Sorprendió que anunciara que él sería el telonero: así abrió la actuación con formidables versiones de «A Good Man is Hard to Find (Pittsburgh)», «For You» y «This Hard Land». Dio paso a continuación a sus anfitriones, Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers. Tras dos canciones Springsteen se unió a la fiesta y poco a poco tomó el control absoluto de la noche, ejerciendo de cantante, guitarrista y frontman. Se vió a un Bruce pletórico, con ganas, lleno de energía que gastó a raudales y de una alegría que contagió a toda la audiencia presente. Vibrante en los solos de guitarra de «Never Be Enough Time» o «Another Thin Line», paseando por la primera fila, dejándose tocar y querer e invitando al público a cantar y participar. Vimos al Springsteen más roquero y relajado, con el añadido extra de la cercanía que ofrece un teatro (algo difícil de ver en sus giras masivas).
Lo que en principio era un concierto de los Houserockers con invitado especial pasó rápidamente a ser un concierto de Springsteen acompañado de Joe y los Houserockers (nada que alegar: ¡ellos estaban encantados!). Junto al repertorio clásico de Grushecky («Homestead», «American Babylon», «Talking to the King», «Pumpin’ Iron» o «Down the Road Apiece») aparecieron innumerables canciones de Springsteen, con bastante énfasis en la época Darkness, tan de actualidad, con «Adam Raised a Cain», «Fire», «The Promised Land» o la propia «Darkness», junto a la reciente «Save my Love», sin duda uno de los momentos álgidos del concierto con ese final alargado y electrizante que le da nueva vida en directo. Tras el «Twist and Shout» de rigor Bruce cerró la noche de nuevo en solitario, con una sentida versión de «Thunder Road». Por la noche Joe nos invita a su fiesta privada post-concierto: copas, buena música y buena compañía (incluyendo la del amigo de Nueva Jersey, al que nadie molesta).
Al día siguiente, 5 de noviembre, repetición de la jugada. De nuevo Bruce ejerciendo de telonero, con impecables versiones acústicas de «Your Own Worst Enemy» (¡qué maravilla!), «Bobby Jean», «I’m On Fire» y «This Hard Land». El concierto con los Houserockers fue practicamente idéntico, con pequeños cambios. A saber: «Johnny 99», «Pink Cadillac», «Light of Day», «Glory Days» y «Burning Love». La conclusión que extraemos es que se ve a Springsteen con muchas ganas de escenario, y entre bambalinas corre el rumor de que se planea una gira para verano del 2011.
Adelantamos ahora dos meses y nos encontramos ahora en Asbury Park, donde durante 3 días se celebra el festival Light of Day, destinado a recaudar fondos para la investigación de una cura a la terrible enfermedad de Parkinson. Más de 70 grupos tocan durante 3 días en diferentes clubs de la renacida Asbury Park (llena de clubs, bares y restaurantes junto a su famoso boardwalk). El viernes 14 de enero se abre la veda con una docena de conciertos en el mítico Stone Pony, local de mil y una correrías nocturnas de Springsteen y sus amigos. Allí vemos a la banda de blues del fotógrafo Danny Clinch (la más que digna Tangiers Blues Band), al clásico Sonny Kenn quien deleita con un estupendo set de rockabilly de los 50, y la aparición de Joe Grushecky para un breve set acústico. Noche de rock y cerveza para abrir boca.
El plato fuerte llega el sábado en el precioso teatro Paramount, situado al principio del boardwalk de Asbury Park. Aquí se grabó el DVD con la actuación del Darkness al completo que aparece en la caja The Promise. Tras varios teloneros llegó el turno para Jesse Malin, posiblemente la mejor actuación de la noche. Acompañado de una banda sólida y super contundente, un Jesse electrizante arrasó desde el minuto uno, y cerró su magnífica actuación con «Broken Radio» a duo con el mismísimo Springsteen, quien hacía la primera aparición de la noche. El incombustible Willie Nile derrochó su pasión habitual y, de nuevo, contó con la presencia de Springsteen al final de su set, con una larga versión de «Heaven Help the Lonely».
Alejandro Escovedo fue el siguiente en subir a escena, esta vez para un set acústico acompañado de su guitarrista. Media hora de tesoros reposados (quizá debería haber actuado antes de Jesse Malin, pues las apariciones previas de Bruce dejaron al público demasiado excitado para prestar atención a melodías en acústico) que culminaron con «Always a Friend» a duo con Springsteen, generoso como siempre con sus amigos. Y cuando se esperaba la entrada de Joe Grushecky al escenario, se repitió de nuevo el mismo guión que en Pittsburgh: Bruce apareció con su guitarra acústica, para ejercer de nuevo de telonero de Joe, y bordó una preciosa versión de «Your Own Worst Enemy», seguida de una muy coreada «This Hard land».
Ya con los Houserockers en el escenario estalló hora y media de rock’n’roll bajo el liderazgo absoluto de Springsteen, quien con ligeras variaciones interpretó casi las mismas canciones que en los conciertos de noviembre en Pittsburgh, en un set más abreviado pero con el añadido de la espléndida «One Way Street», de The Promise. «Thunder Road» fue de nuevo la encargada de poner el broche final a una velada inolvidable y, seguramente, la mejor actuación de Springsteen en un Light of Day, festival en el cual ha actuado ya en 8 de las 11 ediciones, siempre por sorpresa y sin previo aviso.
