Bruce Springsteen to play at SuperBowl

It is now official: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band will perform at the Super Bowl’s halftime on February 1st 2009 on NBC Sports at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL.

The Super Bowl halftime show is annually the most-watched musical performance. More than 148 million viewers in the U.S. watched last year’s show. The Super Bowl and halftime show will be broadcast worldwide in more than 230 countries and territories.

Bruce Springsteen actuará en la SuperBowl

Ayer se anunció oficialmente que Bruce Springsteen and The Street Band actuarán en la XLII edición de la final de la SuperBowl el próximo 1 de febrero de 2009. Springsteen actuará en el descanso del partido que se celebrará en el Raymond James Stadium de Tampla, Florida.

Será la primera vez que Springsteen actúa en este evento, donde han actuado en años anteriores U2, The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Prince o Paul McCartney, entre otros. Se trata del evento musical de mayor audiencia en Estados Unidos, con 148 millones de personas. Además, se retransmite también en más de 200 países. La cadena NBC será la cargada de la retransmisión en directo.

Esta aparición podría significar el principio de una nueva gira si se cumplen las previsiones para que Springsteen pueda tener un nuevo álbum editado por esas fechas, aunque la operación de caderas de Nils Lofgren no parece encajar muy bien con estos planes, ya que Nils ha anunciado que no estará plenamente recuperado hasta la primavera.

Nils Lofgren’s surgery

E Street Band’s guitar player extraordinaire Nils Lofgren has announced in his official website that he will have surgery done in New York next Thursday Sept.30th. to replace his hips. These are Nils’ words, as published in his site:

“Due to a long, beautiful life on the road (40 years) that’s included back flips with guitars, dive rolls, leaping off drum risers and trying to break stage floors with pounding legs due to the amazing energy I gratefully continue to get from you, the audience, in addition to thousands of hours playing aggressive basketball, (my favorite sport to play) on mostly cement, city courts, I have finally destroyed both of my hips and they are both bone on bone with no cartilage left. Thus , I am headed to NYC with my fabulous wife Amy to have bi-lateral hip relacement this Tuesday, Sept. 30th (both hips completely replaced). (…) God willing, it will all go well and I’ll recover completely. I hope to be back home in AZ. to continue rehabbing by late October and start more guitar lessons and writing. If all goes well, I hope I can start doing my acoustic show touring by early Spring.”.

The fact that he expects full recovery and be able to tour “early Spring” could indicate the rumoured E Street Band tour in early 2009 might be that, just a rumour.

Meanwhile, Nils has recently released a brand new album. Under the title “Loner – Nils Sings Neil” he has recorded 15 Neil Young-penned tunes. Nils was part of Neil’s band in the 70′s and participated in some of Neil’s best albums, including the classic “Tonight’s the Night”.

The great Southside Johnny also has a brand-new cover album. He covers Tom Waits, and even has Waits participating in the album, singing a duet with Johnny. “Grapefruit Moon – The Songs of Tom Waits” includes 12 songs written by Waits and performed here by Southside with the powerful La Bamba’s Big Band.

Nils Lofgren pasa por el quirófano

El guitarrista de la E Street Band ha anunciado en su página web oficial que el próximo martes 30 de septiembre será operado en un hospital de Nueva York para que le sean reemplazadas sus caderas. En un comunicado publicado en su web indica los motivos de la operación:

“Debido a una larga vida en la carretera (40 años) que incluye saltos mortales tocando la guitarra, saltos desde la tarima de la batería e intentos de destrozar el suelo del escenario golpeando con los pies debido a la fantástica energía que me da el público, además de miles de horas de jugar con fuerza al baloncesto (mi deporte favorito) sobre pistas de cemento, finalmente he destrozado mis caderas y ya no queda cartílago entre los huesos. (…) El martes 30 de septiembre ambas caderas me serán reemplazadas por completo. (…) Si todo sale bien espero poder empezar mi gira acústica la próxima primavera”.

Este último dato podría indicar que los continuos rumores de una gira de Bruce Springsteen con la E Street Band a principios de 2009 podrían no ser correctos, a no ser que Springsteen decida ir de gira sin Lofgren, cosa que dudamos.

Mientras tanto, Nils ha editado un nuevo álbum, esta vez en homenaje a su amigo Neil Young. Nils formó parte de la banda de Neil Young durante muchos años, participando en discos históricos como “Tonight’s the Night”. El nuevo disco de Nils se titula “Loner – Nils Sings Neil” (comprar) e incluye 15 versiones de algunas de las mejores composiciones de Neil Young.

Otro artista en la órbita de Springsteen, el gran Southside Johnny, también tiene disco nuevo. Acompañado de la fabulosa sección de vientos de La Bamba (la misma que fue de gira con Springsteen en la gira ‘Seeger Sessions’), Southside ha grabado doce versiones de canciones de Tom Waits, y ha contado con la colaboración del propio Waits, quien canta a duo con Southside en alguna canción. El álbum se titula “Grapefruit Moon – The Songs of Tom Waits” (comprar) y se editó hace unas semanas en Estados Unidos.

Happy 58th Birthday

Bruce Frederick Springsteen turns today 59 years old. He was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, on September 23rd 1949.

In the picture, Bruce receives a very special birthday cake from his crew, at the Sept. 21st 1978 concert in Passaic, NJ. The cake had a special “surprise” inside.

Bruce Frederick Springsteen cumple hoy 59 años. Nació en Long Branch, Nueva Jersey, el 23 de septiembre de 1949. Los 59 años mejor llevados de la historia del rock (con permiso de David Bowie, por supuesto).

En la foto, concierto del 21 de septiembre de 1978. Su equipo de técnicos le regaló un pastel de cumpleaños gigante, con “sorpresa” en su interior.

Primera entrega del libro+CD “The Rising” con El Periódico

El primer volumen de la colección de CDs de Bruce Springsteen que edita El Periódico (leer noticia) se distribuye hoy gratuitamente. Se trata del álbum The Rising, cuyo CD vienen en una portada de cartón imitando las clásicas fundas de vinilo. Además con el CD se entrega un libro de 36 páginas con profusión de fotos e información sobre la grabación del disco y la gira mundial. El próximo domingo se pondrá a la venta el segundo volumen de la colección, dedicado al álbum Born in the USA. El 5 de octubre la entrega será doble, con los dos discos que conforman The River.

Hoy hace treinta años Bruce Springsteen iniciaba una tanda de tres conciertos en el pequeño teatro Capitol de Passaic, Nueva Jersey, en plena gira de presentación del álbum Darkness on the Edge of Town.

Springsteen conventions this month

Bruce’s 59th birthday will be celebrated with not one but two fan conventions.

The first convention is “Land of Hope and Dreams”, organized by the dutch fanclub Roulette. It’ll take place in Rotterdam on Sept.27th and 28th. It is a big, huge fan convention, with lots of events happening. Check their website for full info. It’s well worth it!

For the ones who can’t be in Rotterdam for the Bruce fan Convention… for the ones living far from there and willing to spend a last summer weekend on the Adriatic seaside for a special event: “Glory Days in Rimini”, now in its 10th year, something which started in 1999 as a tribute to Springsteen 50th birthday, and going on until today with a full week-end dedicated to Springsteen and American music

Write in your agenda these dates: September 26th and 27th with live music played at the beautiful Rock Island at the pier, free admission, lots of friends and fans from all over Italy and a lot more.
